The story of a skirt

Once, a long time ago, I needed something nice to wear to a friend’s wedding. Money was tight and most of my shopping was in charity shops but I wanted something ‘posher’ than my usual leggings and T-shirt sort of outfit. Near where I worked there was a little boutique where I had often noticed nice things in the window, but never actually been inside. I ventured into there and plumped for this bright summery skirt (it looks much better on than it does in this picture! It's also longer than it is wide!). I made it to the wedding – just – and the friend was married and all was well. That was at least 30 years ago. The couple went on to have four children, all now grown up, and have since divorced and both settled with new partners. But I still have the skirt. I wore it to at least one other wedding, plus several other occasions. I wore it to summer parties and to work and for all sorts of other day-to-day activities. It also has the handy feature that although it is almost ankle length, it buttons all the way down the front, so I can unbutton it part of the way up from the bottom and tie the sides together so I can ride my bicycle without it catching in the wheels! After about 20 years the elastic started to lose its stretch and the garment was getting a bit saggy. I had decided I would soon have to consign it to the rag bag. But then one day as I was walking to the shops in my lunch break, an older lady stopped me on the street and told me ‘You look like a queen!’ I was very surprised, but thanked her of course. And I re-considered my decision. I bought some thin elastic and re-threaded the bands at the waist, and the skirt was given a new lease of life. That was at least 12 years ago. Now it is Little One’s favourite – every time I muse over what to wear for some outing she suggests this skirt. I wore it last week to a family event, where I was complimented on my outfit by a whole new generation of people! So I think its future is assured, at least for a few more years. And it was certainly well worth its purchase price, which wasn’t all that much really anyway! All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2022.

Some beautiful things do not age, this skirt is pretty and elegant. I have a nice cotton pale yellow sweater that I bought in 1985... yes some years ago. I remember that I was wearing it and my niece loved it and thought I had just bought. She did not believe that my sweater has exactly her same age.

The photo really doesn't do it justice! You obviously take good care of your clothes too.

@Fleura I always washed it myself, he never went to a dry cleaner. I have too many clothing that are more than 30 years old, but I feel bad getting rid of them.

@LadyDuck I know, I hate to get rid of things I was fond of, and especially those I made myself. I managed to get around the issue with some things by making old garments into other things, such as clothes for the girls when they were little, or dolls' clothes, or cushion covers... that way I didn't actually throw them out, they just sort of got smaller and smaller...

I thought I was the only person that wore their clothes forever. I wear clothes I wore thirty years ago and they still look fine.

@RubyHawk Gosh, do they really? Sometimes I feel as though I live in a parallel reality! I don't think anyone I know does that!

@Fleura most people empty their closets every year or so but not me. I have a thirty year old coat that looks as well as the day I bought it.

@Fleura No... I would have said it looks like something my mother would wear. (Mom had good taste in clothes, but she did like bright patterns, at times.) I didn't say that because I didn't want to hurt your feelings, but I try to be honest when asked a question.

How great it is to have a skirt that goes along time. It is really worth having it especially when you do look great with that skirt Good thing you know how to make it look good again

It was certainly good value, though it seemed quite expensive to me at the time!

It's a better shape in real life! But the colours are realistic.

From the photo I can't imagine that it is longer than wide. It looks as if it just covers your back bottom. You could add a photo of yourself wearing it.

I know, it looks like a mini-skirt in the photo, because pictures get stretched sideways, when in fact it is below calf length! It really does look better in real life, but I never post photos of myself online (unless I chop off my head!)

Thank you for sharing this interesting story about your skirt. It's good that you could repair it. If the elastic of my skirt starts to lose its stretch and I can no longer wear it, I have no choice but to get rid of it.

That is a lovely story and an equally lovely skirt. And that is indeed a very worthwhile purchase. I'm not this good with caring for my clothes. I'd be lucky if they last 5 years.
