Even the snakes are getting too hot

At least that is what I think. Our weather was off and on cloudy yesterday, then around 4 p.m. got very hot. Hubby had a few errands that had him in and out and at one point he brought Lady in off the porch where she likes to stay. That was because there was a snake coiled at the bottom of the steps. I could not figure out for the longest time why he would be there. It then occurred to me, snakes are cold blooded. Their temperature matches their surroundings. The area around my porch is cooler, because I keep things watered. The snake must have wanted to cool off. He left fairly quickly.

I often find the garden snake near the pond or the water fountain, I think they also need to drink.

@GardenGerty - I have seen them drink after I water the plants, also the lizards.

I am very scared of snakes, not knowing if they are poisonous or not.

There are very few poisonous snakes in Kansas. I knew it was not any kind of rattle snake.

They can get too hot and will find cool damp places to rest during the day.

A snake on my front porch
Henry suddenly jumped off the back of the couch in a startle, so I went over to see what startled him and to check on Maddie (my extremely elderly cat) because she didn't move when Henry did. This little fellow was sneaking up on her, so I gently pulled her back from the screen and shut the window. Then, I turned off the porch light that I didn't even know my roommate forgot to turn off.

Was it a garter snake? I don't mind snakes as long as they aren't poisonous.

It must be pretty hot if even the snakes are looking for cool places.
