Have you had your Shingrix (shingles) vaccine?

I got my first shot of the two part Shingrix vaccine today at my doctor's office.
It's the most recent vaccine for preventing shingles. I had the earlier version many years ago.
I still got shingles one time, but I think the vaccine made it a mild case. It was above one eye and part way down my nose, thankfully not in my eye.
I got an injection right away and some medicine which helped.
Shingles is like the adult version of chickenpox.
If you've ever had shingles or know someone who did, you know how terribly painful it can be.
Have you ever had shingles? Or the vaccine? I'll get the second one in a few months. I'm not feeling too great right now, but it's better than having a bad case of shingles.

I've had shingles three times. But was told I wasn't old enough for the vaccine the last time I had them. (I was around 50 years old at the time. Back then a person had to be 60 to get the vaccine.) That age limit was dropped recently in Missouri. I got the vaccine the day the limit was dropped to 50 years old. I'll get my second and last shot in another month.

@1creekgirl I was sick with a fever for three days. If that's all that happens with the second shot, I'll happily pay that never to have shingles again!

@DaddyEvil I totally agree! I feel achy and hurt all over, but it will be worth it if it prevents shingles.

So glad you were finally able to get the vaccine. Did you have any side effects from the shot?

It might not be around as much now that there's a better vaccine for it. And it doesn't prevent it 100%, but lessens the severity kind of like any vaccine.

I haven't, but I am going to be in a study to get a pnemonia vaccine. I wish it was Shingles instead.

@1creekgirl Yes, I have seen it cost like 2 or 3 hundred bucks even.

The worst thing about this Shingrix is that it's expensive. I have Medicare, but the shot today was $140. And that much again for the second one. I always check GoodRX, but this turned out to be the lowest price.

My sister has shingles but I never did. I did get the vaccine for it withing the last five or ten years. I don't remember when it was. I didn't know that there's a newer one out.

Shingrix came out five years ago. You could ask your doctor about it.

@MarshaMusselman I would think the pharmacy would have a record of it. But it was most likely the original one shot vaccine. This newer two part Shingrix is supposed to have better protection.

@1creekgirl I got the shots through my pharmacy. I'm not sure whether they keep records or if it's up to me or what.

My husband and I have had both shots; and we both had shingles before the shots. His was a mild case; and I had a horrible time of it.

Hopefully even if you ever get it again, it will be a mild case.

I don't do vaccines. After I had meningitis in 2015 I was told not to .
Plus the virus that causes Shingles is also the one that causes viral meningitis. So yeah. Def cant have that one.

@1creekgirl I was in the hospital for two weeks. Then it probably took a month for me to get back to normal.

I just got ove4r my last bout of shingles about 6 weeks ago.
That was the longest case of them I have ever had, they would appear for a week or so and then disappear for a few days and then reappear and start the entire process over. That has been going on for over a year.
I have to go 3 months without an outbreak before the doctor told me that I can take the vaccine.
Between the numerous covid vaccines/boosters, I am in no rush to get yet another vaccine immediately.

@1creekgirl good to know. Last I heard it was like 60 or 65. In any case it still isn't recommended for my age group.

Even young people can get shingles, but vaccines here are for people 50 and older.

My mother had it once and suffered a great deal. Maybe I should get a vaccine also.

If you're over 50, the vaccine might be a good idea.
