I return a book after a long time

I received a nice note yesterday from a friend from our previous hometown. We were both in the writing group there and she used to write the most quirky children’s poetry. She thanked me for returning a book to her.
The book, The Beekeeper of Aleppo, had been on our bookshelves for months. Vince had read it and recommended it to me. I had put off reading it as it is about the flight of a Syrian couple who had lost their son during the war. Eventually, I did read it and discovered her name and address on the sticker on the cover.
She had taken it to writing group once to lend out. I had no recollection of having taken it home and was mortified to think I’d had it at least twelve months. So I posted it back with a letter of apology and received a nice note back.
I rarely lend my favourite books because it’s all too easy for them not to come home. Often, I can’t remember who I lent them to and then they are lost forever.
The photo is Vince’s. He likes taking photos of bees.

That is so nice of you that you still returned it despite the fact that you could have kept quiet that the book was in your possession since I do not think no one will really trace it back to you. I am sure that the owner is super happy to see her book back.

I used to loan out favorite books but finally stopped when they didn't come home and I'd have to buy the book again if it was part of a collection I wanted to keep. (Yes, I always put stickers into my books with my name and address on them but it didn't help them find their way back home.)
I'm sure she was very happy to get her book back again.

@JudyEv I don't buy any books now. (We don't have the money to buy books and we don't have room to store them since we moved into this smaller house.) I found a site online that gives ebooks away and get all my reading material from them now. I read the ebooks on my phone using the Kindle app.

@DaddyEvil That's a good idea but I don't really want to read books on my phone or whatever. I'd rather borrow from the library or pick up cheap books from thrift shops or garage sales.

This sounds like an amazing story, about this Serian couple's life. I don't lend my books now. I gave a couple books away, to people who appreciate books. One book I lent out, it was never seen again.

@kobesbuddy Me either but reading some of the stories, even if they're fiction, they sound very realistic based on what we've heard on the TV news, etc. And from the stories that refugees tell.

@JudyEv I never fully appreciated my stable, safe environment, until now!

In the past we often liked to borrow a lot of books from the library and we would return it on time. Otherwise we would be fined for some money After the pandemic, we haven't been to the library yet as sometimes it could be shut down suddenly due to any cases.

So it sounds like something worth reading.
And good that you remembered and returned the book in time!

I have noticed that too Of all things lending or borrowing books stay that way with no 'return' operation (lol)

@allknowing There is a saying 'Neither a lender nor a borrower be' and it is good advice.

Sometimes we tend to forget to return things we borrowed without even a recollection of borrowing it.
I have lost lots of books and cassette tapes because they were borrowed by my friends. I rarely borrow things. I prefer to buy my own.

@JudyEv That's why I don't borrow. I'm afraid I might lose it and have to pay the person.

An excellent photo of the bee! You have to be patient when it comes to them and hummingbirds.
Glad you returned the book. Now, as someone with a college degree in library science, I have to talk to you about your overdue book fine….

I remember lending a book to someone and never got it back. But, it ended up being no big deal.

@JudyEv Yes I am nowhere near bees. Many years back, the tree parallelly opposite to my room nestled a beehive and 4-5 bees flew in. I moved out of my room and slept in my study room.

This is what happens with us with books. My grandkids love to borrow books from me.

Hopefully, with grandkids you know where the books are and can eventually ask for them back.

Very good advice. I am wondering now if I have any other borrowed books on my shelves. I must go through them one day.
