Back to Music WITH This Commercial Break!

The other day I mentioned that interesting time in history when the BBC banned the Kinks’ song “Lola” because it mentioned a brand name in the lyrics. The Kinks changed “Coca Cola” to “cherry cola” and everything was fine.
So what about all those songs that had brand names IN THE TITLE? Not so easy to change the lyrics! Were they, too, banned by the BBC?
They weren’t banned here in America! In fact, most of these were hits (and the couple that weren’t are still well-known). One of the earliest examples was “Rum and Coca-Cola” by the Andrews Sisters. Interestingly enough, a lot of stations wouldn’t play that song….because of the rum reference!
So let’s look at the commercials in commercial music. Here’s our teaser, an item that’s a relic of the past. Kodachrome was a type of color film that Eastman-Kodak had developed in 1935. Nowadays people would say, “What’s film? What’s a camera?”
But the song is still good! Paul Simon said he was going to originally call it “Going Home,” but thought that was too mundane, so he made it more mysterious with the brand name usage.
And that opening line? One of his best!

I never really thought much about Paul Simon using Kodachrome as his title. Yes I'm old enough to remember when cameras had film and the pictures had to be developed.

@moffittjc — he doesn’t know hardly any music at all. We always tease each other about it.

@FourWalls Oh gosh, does he have a comment here I need to go read? Or are you just saying in general?
Is Paul Simon related to Neil Simon?
Btw...I really do know who Paul Simon is. One of my favorite songs is Bridge Over Troubled Water by Simon and Garfunkel.

@FourWalls guess I am a bit too young and non-American.

It was a good-sized hit here in America in the 70s. Gotta be old like me to remember some of these.

There are some bright colors on that tune! And bright music too. One of my favorite Simon albums

With “Loves Me Like a Rock” and the very underrated “American Tune,” it’s easy to understand why it’d be a favorite!!

@FourWalls Oh yes, terrific! Paul Simon recorded this at Muscle Shoals Sound Studios in Alabama with the famous Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section.
And the musicians who played on that album were top notch.

It’s the best therapy for me. It’s not for everyone, though: some songs bring back bad memories.

I don’t even remember Kodachrome (the product) in the 70s when this song was popular, but I do remember the 45 having the disclaimer about “Kodachrome is a registered trademark of Eastman-Kodak.”

Kodachrome is really mysterious, it's intriguing. I like the beat of the song.

It’s a cool mix of rock and country (with the fiddle at the end).

Know the singer and the song but never really got into it, I think it played much too often on the radio until I had Kodachrome on the brain lol

Great! I love it when someone discovers a “new” song here, no matter how old it is!

That’s part of the fun of the 70s. Songs had such weird titles (see: most of Led Zeppelin’s catalog) that it’s very easy to completely disassociate the song from its title.
