Here's A Rather Terrible Story

One of the hosts on QVC(am watching Gourmet Holiday)tells the story about when she was first married. Her in-laws were coming to dinner and she was nervous, sweating, and trying to make a good appearance. She says she fixed a chicken dish. That next Christmas holiday she got a cookbook from her in-laws. Oh gosh! I would have felt horrible. How would you have felt?

The cookbook might only be that they wanted here to have more ideas for delicious dinners not that they did not like what she made,

No, I wouldn’t have felt horrible. I would have been happy that they gave me a gift.

She must have been self conscious.

Unless there was a nasty note accompanying the cookbook, I wouldn't give it too much thought. Sometime ago, I worked with a girl who said what she wanted for Christmas: a Robin Cook book, and I immediately thought "Why would you want to cook a robin?"

I'm assuming they weren't thrilled with her cooking hence the cookbook as a gift. I remember when I was first married I didn't know how to cook much either. Thankfully I learned as time went on

That is how I took it and the host telling the story did too.

Looking at it from the brighter side, maybe they gave her a cookbook because they thought she really liked to cook, since she did fix a dish for them for the holidays, LOL! But I might have taken it negatively, too.

I probably would have just laughed it off. My wife does not cook, and when I met her she had all these pots and pans and when I asked her what she used them for, she said they were a joke Christmas gift. They were all unused. lol

If she talked about wanting to learn to cook better it was a nice gift, if not it was an offensive gift.

A cookbook is always a good gift for someone who likes to cook. Maybe they just thought she'd appreciate it. I wouldn't have been offended by it.

It depend on how well I knew them and vice-versa. I can understand her feeling terrible, but hopefully they just assumed she loved cooking so a cookbook was a great gift!

I can see where that could be the case.
