Say hello to Jim, the sulphur-crested cockatoo that it is our privilege to look after for the fortnight that we’re house-sitting. He is a dinky-di Aussie cockatoo and likes a small piece of toast spread with butter and Vegemite with his breakfast of a piece of gingernut biscuit and a couple of almonds. He has been very good so far and hasn’t bitten us which was my worry. But normally he doesn’t bite and we’re careful to move slowly if we want to pet him so we don’t frighten him. If he feels so inclined, he will climb on our shoulder and we’ll bring him up to his perch on the back verandah where he will spend a couple of hours. If we get out of sight for too long, he will start to squawk. We might take him for a walk to the wood-heap or somesuch but the weather hasn’t been the best for too much activity. Late afternoon, he gets some sunflower seeds and some oats. He also likes thistles or wild oats from time to time. Isn’t he just lovely?

Yes, he is beautiful.. I'm glad you and Vince still haven't sacrificed any fingers to him, too. What does "dinky-di" mean?

Dinky-di means 'fair dinkum, mate'. It means genuine or true.

He doesn't talk unfortunately. We were teasing his owners that we would teach him to swear but he is probably too old to learn to talk.

Wow, I wonder how old is he. By the size of him, he looks pretty mature already. I wonder if these birds can be taught to speak or mimic us.

@JudyEv I guess that one cannot be trained anymore. They say they live long like humans do if properly taken care of.

@rsa101 That's true. Some live a very long time.

He is certainly full-grown but I don't know how old he is. They make good talkers but you have to start teaching them when they are young.

@JudyEv Where would he go to get some in the wild should he ever decide to take off, though?

He is very cute - and so quaint that he likes Vegemite.

@BarBaraPrz He probably wouldn't survive in the wild now. He's been tame too long and he'd be at risk from the wild birds.

The real Jim! I can understand the seeds and maybe the biscuits, but the vegemite is a bit unusual, I think

I was really surprised when they said he liked his toast with Vegemite. But it means he'll a real Aussie, don't you think?

Yes, Jim is a pretty bird, and I'm sure that you are both enjoying each other's company. I'm glad that he hasn't bitten you, it would be terrible to have to bite him back to teach him better.

I don't really fancy a mouthful of feathers so I'll continue to be careful and try to keep on his good side!

@judyev Does he leave unpleasant messages on your shoulder? Take him for a walk ??? Is he tethered in some way or free to roam or what?

He does leave messages but our hostess's soiled jacket is on a kitchen chair and I'm thinking I'll wear that. He has one wing clipped so he can't fly away. I'd sit him on my shoulder and walk. If he wants to go on the ground for a while, he will apparently start climbing down your arm. When he'd had enough of fossicking around in the grass, he climbs up your arm and you can take him home. Sounds simple, doesn't it? But we haven't' tried anything beyond taking him from his big cage to his perch on the verandah.

That's an absolute gorgeous bird! What an honor that he accepts and trusts y'all. I think they are so funny but I have heard that such birds take a lot of time and attention. Perfect set up to get to baby, or birdy, sit for him.
