The photo shows a ‘little grey Fergie’, a Ferguson tractor which was, and often still is, a much treasured piece of farm equipment. Officially, it is the Ferguson TE20, designed by Englishman Harry Ferguson. It was produced from 1946 to 1956. It was small, lightweight, manoeuvrable and versatile. It also featured the hydraulic three-point hitch system which quickly became very popular with all makes of tractors. It was more affordable for the average farmer. Being small and light, it often took the place of the draught horse and took away some of the manual drudge of the small farmer. Many are still in use, as this one appears to be, and they are also very popular with collectors. Some more interesting points: • In 1956, a fleet of little grey Fergies were used to build levee banks to save the town of Wentworth from flooding. There is a monument at the junction of the Darling and Murray Rivers to commemorate the event. • Seven modified Fergies were used on the 1955-58 Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition. • Betsy, a diesel Fergie, is in the Guinness Book of Records for its trip of 3,176 miles (5,111 km) around the coastline of Britain. • Between 1992 and 2015, a Fergie was shown on the NZ five-dollar note. • A Fergie starred in a TV series for preschool children, which premiered in the UK in 2013. • Australian folk musician Peter Pentland released an album in 1979 entitled Me Beaut Little Fergie Tractor. The photo was taken by me in the shed of our house-sit.

In 1953, Ferguson merged with Massey-Harris of Toronto to become Massey-Ferguson... I had two uncles who worked there.

There were a lot of Massey-Ferguson tractors and implements on the farms in my day.

Some were adapted with tracks and half-tracks but a couple were left and even had the three point linkage for loading and unloading supplies.

@Ronrybs I'm sure the ponies and dogs were pleased to be replaced although possibly they still had dogs.

I've never seen one. I've seen the big ones whenever I'm on the back roads on our west side.

Yes, I can see that. It's not much bigger than that pickup truck.

Some that they have now are real monsters. This looks like a toy beside them.

My Dad had a trusted Massey 365 which was used for alot of little odd jobs. Is that a Cockshutt in the background? My Dad had those over the years on the farm as well.

I haven't heard of Cockshutt here. The yellow tractor is a Chamberlain.

@Juliaacv I think I've heard of White tractors but it's not a really common brand here.

That a cute little Fergie. The only tractors I've seen around here are yellow and bigger

@JudyEv we might have them here but I've never really paid attention even though I am surrounded by farms.

Often particular brands are popular in an area, probably depending on what dealerships are in the region.

What cool trivia. Amazing how the tractor revolutionized things. My Great Grandpa was a tractor dealer - John Deere brand - at the time when people were trading their work horses for tractors. A different sort of horse power I suppose

Jphn Deeres were quite common here too and my brother restored a John Deere. He was totally blind when he did it.

These small size makes them very handy for smaller jobs. They are popular on orchards and vineyards too.

@JudyEv They have a special one smaller for the local vineyards. That one would not go through.

I kind of still have it in my head that that is what a tractor is, if you see what I mean. Then I get a shock when I realise how old they are. No cab at all of course. Farmers now have a much more cushy life!

@JudyEv Not heard of microwaves but they certainly have air-conditioning and a sound system. But then I imagine Australian models have more facilities because the farms are so vast!

@Fleura They even have self-propelled models now that act on some sort of GPS signals. However, I did hear of one getting itself bogged while trundling along on its own.

Some of the monsters they have now have microwaves in the cab. My brother used to warm his home-made pastie by sitting it on the hood covering the engine.
