What's in a name? Well you might ask

When my husband and I come across a strange-sounding surname (Goodenough, Sidebottom, Bueglehole are three that spring to mind) we often say jokingly ‘I wonder how they got their name’. In my recent post about Ferguson tractors, Juliaacv (@Juliaacv) mentions a farm machinery brand called ‘Cockshutt’ and I found myself wondering about that name too. Then Vince tells me that, back in the late 1960s, his boss had what they all called an Arsewinkle harvester. I didn’t really believe this so off I googled and found there was indeed a town in Germany called ‘Harsewinkel’. It is the home of one of Europe’s leading harvester manufacturers, Claas. The company is a major employer in the town. The photo is of a canola crop we came across on our morning walk with Dixie.

When Pretty was little, sometimes our vacations were just going places in the US with odd names for the city or a river, just to see if we could find out how the place or river got it's name. Some of them had interesting stories behind the name and some didn't. It was still fun to go and explore.

@JudyEv Yes, like that. I find things like that very interesting. In my state, there are two tiny towns on the map. One is named Turkey and a few miles down the highway, another small town is named Gobbler. Between the two towns it is heavily forested and turkeys roost in those trees. At dusk and dawn, you can hear the turkeys going to roost or waking up and leaving their roosting spots.

@DaddyEvil That is so funny! England has a lot of strange names too. Lots of Little This and Big This sort of thing.

I know what you're saying. Our suburb, Treeby, is named after the people who owned the farmland before it was sold to developers.

@RebeccasFarm Thanks. I'm squinting a bit as I'm looking into the sun. Vince prefers people to take off their dark sunglasses when he's taking photos.

It's one of those puffer type jackets. We bought on each in Thailand but this one will have to be jettisioned as the zip won't do up properly. I like my hat. It keeps my ears warm.

From the picture you have, it looks like the weather is cold despite the sun is shining brightly there. The sweater you are wearing shows that it is cold there.

I remember a player with surname as Sidebottom played for Australia sometime last year. And Goodenough sounds like the tyre company - GoodYear !

I will just have to do a search on the Aresewinkle harvester, I find these names quite interesting. These days there are not alot of choices for farmers today for the brands of tractors that they work with nor the prices. When we went away in July we went by some canola fields. They are a very vibrant and bright colour aren't they? Thanks for the mention in your post.

It's actually Harsewinkel and they make Claas machines. Vince's boss adjusted the name a little! lol

I'd like to know how Englebert Humperdinck settled on his (completely made-up) name. Eddie Izzard has a pretty funny stand-up routine about it.

Usually would-be celebrities went for something more straightforward. It's certainly a mouthful.

I was always glad that Vince didn't have a strange surname! I'm a bit of a snob sometimes. lol Evans is pretty innocuous although many think he has Welsh heritage but he's an Irish Evans.

@JudyEv It is quite amazing how people spread, especially way back when. I don't think you can lock a surname to one location anymore
