On a drive recently to look at a flooded river, we passed this old ruin. There was a plaque on the roadside which said that it was Glenfield Homestead and built in the 1860s. It is now part of a heritage trail. Another sign warned that it was forbidden to explore the ruins as the walls were unstable and there was a risk of ground collapsing into underground cellars. The lower right photo shows the floodwaters. You can see that the river has come partway up the fence. When I tried to find more on Glenfield Homestead, I discovered there is a geocache nearby. And if you remember my post about a flooded car ('Road Closed' means 'don't go any further'! / myLot), it turned out the driver was an 80-year-old and the police had to wade out to his car to rescue his 60 kg dog. An incident happened about 7am and we got there about 9am so, apart from extracting the car from its predicament, the action was all over.

I'd want to go look around inside the old homestead... too bad you weren't allowed to do that. But, yeah, I don't want you or Vince to get hurt doing something like that.

@FourWalls Nah... I can talk with ghosts here. Don't need to go somewhere else to see them. But thanks anyway.

We were very tempted to jump the fence but then we might have ended up on the news ourselves, being rescued from an old cellar!

This is the kind of situation when I wonder why they don't have tests to check that the elderly person is still in his/her right mind. Many 80 yr olds shouldn't drive anymore because first of all they're not able to respond quickly to road hazards and secondly some are mentally impaired by that time. I'm praying I won't be one of them.

Good grief, that must have been terrifying for all of you. I'm sorry your dad passed but maybe it was in his best interest. Many elderly .... and I can see myself heading that direction .... want desperately to remain independent no matter what risk they pose to others.

I agree with you but the problem is that no one has come up with any rules that would weed out those who pose a danger. In fact I honestly believe that there should be rules about drivers with mental disabilities, I'm not sure if they do or not but they should.

I agree in a way but not all elderly are impaired and it would be/will be pretty devastating to lose your licence and all the independence that goes with it.

Oh dear the flood water Judy. Though these photos are lovely. I do love the name of the place Glenfield. Obviously built with love so long ago. Glad they save the elderly man and dog.

The floods weren't really too bad although with the fence being half-inundated it looks impressive. There were no houses in danger.

Many parts of the US has had severe flooding, too. We’ve only had a summer long heatwave and drought.

We've been hearing about the terrible floods on the news. And myLotters have been talking about the heat and drought. The US has had a bit of everything - like most other countries, I guess.

Yes, it was a very big and solid dog. Maybe they hauled it out the window then let it swim.

@LadyDuck My mother mostly lived where shortage of water was a problem. She always yearned for a place with a creek running through it.

It's really just a shallow valley with a creek running through it. If there is enough rain, the water gradually spreads out. There was no danger to any houses.

I am quite fascinated by old and abandoned houses. There is cottage, not far from here, that I like to pass by on my walks. I usually stop for a quick lunch and see how much more decay has overtaken the old structure. There was another one, not much further away, but it burnt down a couple of years back

We're too old now but I always think about how it would be to do one of these old homes up. Most are too far gone but a few years back some of them could have been salvaged.

@Ronrybs The bathroom in this place has fittings that look antique but would be recently made and of modern materials

@JudyEv I know that some older houses have been stripped of interior bits. There is quite a market for some of these older fittings

I will check your post about flooded car. I am happy that the old man and his dog are safe. We had a lot of continuous rain in this month and last two days were too heavy. Today many parts of the city were flooded. Everything was closed today under rain emergency. We didn't get any rain today. I hope we get some days of bright sun to improve the situation faster. Many trees uprooted last night due to heavy rain and wind.

Heavy rain and flooding can really impact on an area. Nothing can be done much until the flood waters subside. I hope the situation is improving now.

@JudyEv We had a break from rain for a day. And it's Wednesday afternoon and the rain is back with strong winds. My husband has got a mail from his office to continue working from home till this weekend. My daughter's institute has sent a circular that they might have virtual classes if rain continues. They will confirm it later. My school has water logged and the basement is flooded where I take my classes. I have to wait for a mail from them for things to get clear. Seems like we might have classes on Zoom.

You wouldn't want to fall into an old cellar. You might be there for a very long time.
