Our Cruise Had a Fire

We ported in Ketchikan two days in and that was a fun experience going on a crab boat and then all you can eat crab, salad and cheesecake. We got back onboard after having a fun day and headed to Juneau. About 8:30 pm, we were watching the Jeff Nease comedy and saw a few employees on phones running backstage. Then from the speaker heard Bravo, Bravo Bravo, kilo kilo kilo, and as we filed out of the theater, all the crew from the aft came running forward. A few seconds later, an announcement came there was a fire onboard. Everyone was kept in the forward area and the steel fire walls came down blocking off the back and middle of the ship. Seeing crew with life jackets on was a bit alarming especially when ours were located in the muster station, blocked by the doors. The fire was put out within an hour and by 10 pm, we could go to our rooms or where we wanted to. You can google the fire (Quantum of The Seas fire), but keep in mind, the comments will have different accounts with some exaggeration. Quite a few were very drunk that night so that could explain some of their accounts. Of course, a lawyer wrote a piece about it and you probably guessing right if you think he's going to begin a class action for those affected. We arrived back in Seattle at 6 am this morning and was able to disembark at 8 am. One thing I wish cruises did was not port until later, but they have another cruise leaving just a few hours later so have to get us off to finish sanitizing and prepping for the new arrivals. This was an "interesting" cruise. We were informed once out to sea we would not be going through the glaciers due to one engine still needing repairs, so to reach ports on time, we had to change. I'll catch up soon. I'm very tired and going to rest from my vacation. Have you been on a cruise?

The closest I have been on a cruise was when my relatives and myself got aboard the steamship Cristobal from Colon Panama to New Orleans in the 1970s before the Cristobal went to Texas to be sold for scrap.

I would love to go on a river cruise, especially with a paddleboat.

Oh my, I'm sure that was really frightening! We're supposed to leave on a cruise in about a week. Hope no "excitement" like that.

I hope your cruise goes smoothly. I've been on one before going to Mexico. It went smoothly.

@noni1959 We had to cancel yesterday because I have a ruptured tendon in my toe. There's no way I could walk that much.

Not a fan of cruises. Took one though in Manila Bay but that was a relatively short one - six hours if I remember correctly. It was a company event in my previous work. 'Interesting' doesn't begin to describe your cruise.

@noni1959 I wouldn't want to be stuck in a long cruise myself.

I'm glad we didn't do the 9-day cruise. By the time the fifth day came, we were ready to be done.

@allen0187 If we were to see many ports it would have been great but with the engine issues, our intinary changed and we only do so much on the ship. I'd love to go on a 10-day island hopping cruise to hawaii.

There are some good, but it seems to be common for things to happen now. It has given us pause about taking one that goes outside of the passage into the sea now.

A fire on a ship is always concerning and I cannot believe that the crew had life jackets and you were without. The lawyer has enough to start a class action for sure. I have been on two cruises, my husband hates.

@noni1959 The security on the ship was not good, they had to keep the passengers safe BEFORE the crew. I would file a complain.

@LadyDuck Many are and I have sent contact info many times and no answer yet so will call again today. Their customer service for this is awful. Maybe they are trying to get advice from their lawyers first. I just want them to acknowledge what was wrong with this situation and refund our Wi-Fi that didn't work.

I can't believe they had those on and not handing out too. Years ago, they had them in our staterooms and along walls in different locations. My son and I talked about the Italy cruise but now not so sure.

I'm glad you are all safe. That would have been a bit scary. I bet the crew were very glad they didn't have to deal with getting drunk people to safety. It would be hard enough with sober ones.

It would have been awful. There were many drunk and continued to get drinks while we were in the forward. Amazing how many drink on there.

I would have skipped all the other stuff and just ate all you can eat cheesecake the whole time . That would be so scary you not have a life jacket on when the fire started. How neat there is steel fire doors! I’ve never been on a cruise. Could take it or leave it not something I really look forward to doing but could be fun.

I love water. I've sailed boats in races and for pleasure for many years. Something about the water just feels good. However, now I am iffy about another huge cruise ship.

Never a dill momet for you. I'm glad you are safe and had fun. It sounds like you drove close by my house on your way home from Seattle.

Nope. Seems something drama follows me often. When we left Seattle, we headed to my son's in Prosser, WA. I think it was a three-hour trip but can't remember the highways. I stayed the night there and from his house, I went to mine on the 30, 97, 84, 205 and I-5 until Salem to hit the 22. I probably got some of those out of order. Be nice someday to say hi in person. I'm very rural Scio and Seattle is about four hours.

I have never been on a cruise. My mother once talked about doing one, but we didn't.

that means it was a very dangerous cruise journey

When I was small, my Dad worked as an engine mechanic for some time. He must have been good at it, someone in Ketchikan heard of his work and he was hired to rebuild engines on two huge fishing boats. He packed us up and we lived there for some months. He loved being in Alaska, and I think he would have just stayed there, but he was married to my mother at the time and she hated it. I thought it was really a neat place to live, but I was just a kid. Yes, I have been on numerous cruises. They are always enjoyable, we have been fortunate in that we've not encountered weather problems too often on the cruises. However, we went on one about 5 years ago (before Covid) that got hit with Norovirus, and we all came home so sick. We thought that was a fluke. My daughter went on a cruise with her husband and children about 2 months ago, and they came home sick, too. Again, not Covid. I think they just pack too many people on some of those boats. I like cruises, they are fun. But I don't desire to go again, I would rather go somewhere on land and see things I've not seen before. I am interested in a river cruise sometime, but they are extremely pricey, so I doubt that will happen. I'm sure sorry to hear about the fire, that must have been extremely scary.
