Responding To a Mylot Comment

I had been commenting back and forth with a Mylot member and had a very strange response at one point. This person commented that transgenderism is a mental illness. I was shocked. I thought it over. How could a seemingly intelligent person think this way? I checked with the American Psychological Association (APA) and it states that it is NOT a mental illness. Many cultures have this. Because of some of the adverse things that go on in a transgender's life, however, they have a higher risk of depression and other mental issues but, transgender is not a mental illness. I fully respect this person's right to free speech and to believe whatever they wish but, I just wanted to state here that transgenderism is not a mental illness. Gay and transgender people get enough bad press as it is.

It absolutely isn’t a mental illness. I don’t know exactly how it happens but it’s something that goes wrong while the babies in the womb. It isn’t anything that anyone does or doesn’t do. It’s just a fact that can’t be disputed. The child knows from the time they are born.

Right. It has to do with their identity and living with themselves. It is very personal I think. And, we have no right to say they have mutilated themselves when we obviously don't understand the journey they have gone through.

He deleted all of his comments. Why someone would make such a comment is beyond me.

We are all on continuums --sexuality and gender identity are just two examples of continuums--to call it a mental illness is not only wrong, it is also hurtful--

If the myLotter who answered that isn’t a native English speaker, there’s a chance he/she wasn’t able to say the right word. ‘Mental illness’ can mean another thing

When you think you are something or someone you are not, that is a mental illness. When you potentially seek to mutilate your body, that is also a mental illness. I don't care what clinical term they want to use now that is politically correct. Self mutilation and identity issues is a mental illness that should be treated. Not encouraged. I stand by my comment.

@porwest .......If I misconstrued what you were saying I do apologize. But, it isn't a mental illness. I do see where some medical professionals could take some transgender's money and not due their due diligence and require some counseling before any surgery is done. I think it is a good idea although I also feel it is their right to have this surgery done to their own bodies. I think it goes both ways. Both the medical profession and the psychologist should due their due diligence. They are professionals after all.

@porwest ..........You can take 'professionals' as lightly as you like. They are still in that capacity and need to act like it. I always check sources whether I've just spoken to my doctor or not. And that is what second opinions are for also. The COVID situation was a first and I partly understand CDC and the problems. Thank goodness Fauci was at the helm. Trump could have caused a lot of problems if he had been in office longer. Thank the Gods he wasn't. It sounds like you may have had some bad experiences with 'professionals'. I feel lucky to have some great ones taking care of me. We all need to do our own due diligence, not just professionals.

I think it goes both ways. Both the medical profession and the psychologist should due their due diligence. They are professionals after all. @celticeagle I take the term 'professionals' lightly these days, right along with the term 'experts.' I think we rely too much on being confident everyone knows what they are talking about. Look at all the experts at the CDC, all professionals, who go Covid entirely wrong. I think we are best served to err on the side of caution whenever someone calls themselves professionals or experts. They are just words and not always indicative of facts.

It is not mental illness. A person just feels like they are in the wrong body.

Me either. I guess this person feels it is a mental illness when they choose to mutilate themselves. This person sure doesn't know much, or care, about the journey these transgenders go through. It's sad.

I totally agree. I think it is pretty twisted to say a person has mutilated themselves when that person has wanted this change and worked toward it for who knows how long.
