Men also make great endurance riders

MyLotter changjiangzhibin89 (@changjiangzhibin89) mentioned on my horse endurance post that the riders were all females so I thought I’d do a collage of some male riders. The men are outnumbered by the women but are still very competitive. There are at least four husband-and-wife teams as well as some individuals. Just a few points about the photos. Top left shows a mare with all four feet off the ground. This mare and several stable-mates were badly affected by a bushfire. They huddled round a tank while the fire went through but were badly affected by smoke. It took a long time for them to recover. This mare is extremely fast and has done really well in endurance. Top right is a FIFO (fly in fly out) worker who rides when he can. His wife also rides this horse if he is away. It is a strong, feisty mount but is starting to settle down and behave a bit more sensibly now. Lower left is one of my favourite ‘gentlemen’ riders. He is always anxious about his horse and is just the nicest person. He recently turned 50. Lower right is a Swiss immigrant. Both he and his wife ride regularly and also volunteer if they’re not riding. His grey mare is very pretty and he is very proud of her.

I thought this was a sport in which men would outnumber women , not the other way around.

I was surprised a bit to come up with so many men riders. There were more than I thought.

I sure you witnessed how each of them handled their horses.

Unless they are knowledgeable and treat their horses properly, they never become very successful.

@aninditasen Unless a horse is treated and trained properly, it wouldn't be able to cover the distances asked of it.

It is the same here. Women ride endurance more then men.

A lot of them operate on their own at the rides too. They might drive for miles to get there, then erect their yard, set up camp, strap for the themselves, pack it all up and drive home again. They are certainly tough.

@JudyEv I know some have large trailers that they leave the horse in here. Plus many trailers have a small camper like area built in the front of them anymore.

@wolfgirl569 A lot do have trailers that might take 2 or 3 horses but which also have a small living area in the front.

That's a great collage of pictures and different to see men in the saddle. The horse in the top left ... that's quite a story about him being in a fire. Lucky he survived and can do so well in an endurance race. I love the little stories you gave us with each picture.

@JudyEv I've learned so much about endurance racing from your post and it's not something I even knew existed before.

I always think it is interesting to know a little bit about a photo above and beyond it's this or it's that. The fires were terrible and a lot of livestock was lost.

@rebelann Not really but this one likes to lick her handler. Perhaps she is getting salt from the skin.

She is extremely fast too but she always pulls a face when she is given electrolytes during a ride.

Some do wear GoPro cameras but mostly such 'shapes' are headlights. The longer rides often start out in the dark.

@judy Now that it’s been mentioned, I realise that the male of the species has been underrepresented in your collection. Nice to see things balanced up.

I think I could do this, as the horse does all the work! Still not sure about sitting in the saddle for several hours, I am a terrible fidget!

Take my advice and forget it. People get chafed legs and bottoms and blisters in indescribable places, especially over the longer distances.

I would have thought that either men or women would make great riders for this type of a sport. That horse in the upper left corner is stunning looking.

I was surprised when you'd only showed women riders as I thought there would be many men enjoying this sport, too. I'm glad to see it isn't just women riders. I'm also happy to know the horses you're talking about that were affected by the bushfire recovered, even if it did take a long time.

@JudyEv Your state probably has less people riding because you and Vince don't ride... I bet that would give just enough riders to have the same number as other states there.

The first post from this ride showed those that were first over the line and they were all women. Our state has a lot less riders than some states/countries.

Some horses get sick and 'sour' if they are only ever ridden in an arena. I'm sure they enjoy something a bit different.
