An antique cupboard with glass doors

The photo shows a small cupboard which is in our house-sit home. It would be very old and has fancy glass doors. There doesn’t seem many antiques in the house but I do like this little cupboard. The photo on the cupboard is of the two daughters. They are now teenagers and will likely break a few hearts in years to come. Do you think they’d notice it missing if we smuggled the cupboard home? (That’s a joke)

We had a cupboard like that when I was growing up on the farm! Mom kept books behind the glass doors. They were her favorites and the ones I learned to read as I stood at her knees while she read to my youngest brother and I.

How funny to find a similar one on the other side of the world!

@Fleura Possibly both came from the 'old country' originally.

What a great memory! Do you know what happened to the cupboard?

@JudyEv This one is older than 70 for sure, I would say at least 90 years old.

@LadyDuck Thanks for your thoughts. I was thinking getting up to 100 but then wondered if I was getting carried away.

How old do you think it would be, Anna? Several asked me and I guessed 70 to 100 years old which gave me a large margin of error!

I worry about those fancy glass doors during an earthquake. Sorry, do you have earthquakes in your country?

We have so few earthquakes that they never cross our minds.

Unless it holds some sentimental value, the owners might even be glad because it saves them the trouble of donating it to some charitable org. I think it's too small to accommodate large items and better suited for knick-knacks. How old do you think it is?

I think it has probably been in the family for quite some time so I doubt they want to get rid of it. I would guess it's perhaps 70 - 100 years old or something like that.

@JudyEv I know it is just thinking and you or Vince would not take the cupboard. I know it was a joke. I have seen cupboards like that and they are very nice and full with dishes. I like it too but have no place for it so I would not try to take it from its spot.

If English is not your first language, it can be confusing when people say things like 'I might smuggle it out' so I try to help them understand what I'm saying.

@Hannihar We have no plans to come back but we might be asked again if the people want to go on holiday.

@JudyEv I understand that. Since English is my Mother Tongue I understand what you are saying but others might not get it. I can just see you and Vince planning how you will get it out so others do not see. Will you be going back to that house again to house-sit? You could get in disguises and plan it.

A rather unfortunate placing of the covered cake dish...

The cake dish was on the kitchen counter when we arrived. I think they put it up there out of our way.

Well, if you get Vince to paint a portrait of the cupboard on the wall…. I love the work in the glass doors! It is very beautiful, and you can see the craftsmanship, even in the photo.

@JudyEv — and it’s so much more expensive than cheap plexiglass.

It's a wonder they don't incorporate that sort of glass decoration nowadays. Maybe it needs individual work and by a craftsman.

I have a query (after reading your post)...exactly how old should be termed as antique, just wondering....is it as per my age? or style/make of the product or product's age of existence

That is lovely, so pretty with the fancy glass. We have an antique china cabinet, it is part of the dining suite that we inherited from my Gramma. I keep my good china and crystal in it, and some mementos from 35 years ago today, our wedding cake topper is in there. I don't think that you should attempt to smuggle that home, they would notice.
