Perhaps it is a weird idea. But hear me out. Of course, if you have been following, we have our first real camping trip planned for this weekend in St. Charles, Missouri at Sundermeir RV Park about an hour away. It should be a fun experience as well as a learning one. We arrive Saturday afternoon and depart Sunday around noon, so it is a quick outing for sure. But it also poses an opportunity. If we like the park, what if we rented a spot for a week next spring or summer and then just commuted during the week to work, but were still technically camping? That could be the best of both worlds. I would be about an hour from work and the wife, who works at a major hospital in St. Louis would be about 28 minutes from work. As we test the waters it might be a good gauge of how we might actually survive a longer trip, plus we lose no money in the process other than the cost of the campsite. Just something I will consider as we spend the weekend there to see if that is something we may actually want to do next year. I will keep you posted, and of course I plan to let you know how the first real camp goes. Wish us luck. We may need it.

Do you have to pay for a campsite you stay or camp? I thought you are free to camp anywhere you want to.

@Nakitakona Camping should be something one can just do, when they want to, on their own terms, and not have it be something organized by someone else.

@porwest Well, that's how you regard it. May I have your point why you looked at it as ridiculous?

It took me a long time to finally pull the trigger and get one. I have been wanting one for probably 20+ years.

@Shavkat Yeah. I agree. And I wonder if there will come a time when I will have wished I had done it much sooner. But there is only the present and the future to look to.

It should make a good test, at least. If you hate it you can always take the camper home and say you tried. (I hated driving long distances to work but you do that all the time anyway.) I hope you both have fun.

Well, my job is about five minutes from the house. But yes, I do a lot of travel for business, so there's that. All said, our first camping outing went swell and nary without a hiccup, so I was happy with it.

That’s actually a really good idea. I did it 2 years ago with my son when he was on spring break from high school. We set up camp in a nearby state park for the week, and I went to work each morning (working half days) while he slept in and tended the campsite.

Nice little test runs. Plus we can make better lists of things we find we might need for extended stays.

@porwest You're definitely going to find things to add to the list. I think I'm still making those lists for how to make things better, and I've been camping my entire life! lol

Sounds like a good plan. You’d have a longer camping experience and see how you like it.

@porwest You might find you like living in a camper.

Yeah, that would be the idea. See what an extended stay feels like and gauge whether it would be for us or not—it would also let us make a better list of things we would find we would need.

My in-laws are all seasonal campers, and that is what they do. They move out to the park on the long weekend in May and are out there all of the time, except when they are commuting or they are working, until late October when the park closes. People do it from their cottages, why not from a campground?

That sounds a good plan. An hour's commute sounds a bit long but perhaps it's more or less what you're already used to.

Well, right now I live about 5 minutes from work, so it would be a much farther drive for me. But the wife would be about the same. But it would be a sacrifice I would be willing to make to camp and still make money while we are doing it. lol

Should be an adventure for sure. A little different than when he had it parked in our driveway and had access to anything we needed. lol

Sounds like a good plan. I would say take it a step at a time. That is what you seem to be doing. I wish you both an enjoyable weekend.
