A cute foal in Yabberup, Western Australia

When we were house-sitting in Yabberup, we visited some friends who lived nearby. She and her daughter breed warm-blood horses and we were able to visit this little foal which was only a week or so old. The term ‘warmblood’ is used a bit indiscriminately but basically they are a group of sport horses originating from a number of breeds. Cold-blooded horses are the heavy draught types bred for haulage and agricultural purposes while hot-blooded horses are the more refined, often more highly strung, light saddle horses such as the thoroughbred and Arab. Like all young things, he is very, very cute and hopefully will grow up to have a happy life as well as bringing happiness to others. His front legs still have to straighten up a bit and he will probably eventually turn grey like his mother. The photo was taken by Vince.

I didn't know there were warm and cold blooded breeds. I thought they were all warm blooded as they were mammals.

They all have warm blood but warm-, hot- and cold-blooded refers more to their temperaments.

I believe his dam is what we called a "dappled gray" when I was a kid. And the foal is cute. Well, if we were that size when we were a week old, our legs would probably be really bent when we were born, too.

@JudyEv Is Jim your older brother? It's a good picture. I bet you wore your pony out.

@DaddyEvil Yes, he is/was eight years older than me. I could rock that so hard it used to bounce across the wooden verandah. lol It has been restored and is still going strong.

We'd call her dappled grey too. My rocking horse was sort of dapple grey too. lol

What a cutie. I hope he has a good happy life too. Over the years, we've had several including three drafts. Right now, there are three quarter, a thoroughbred, Tennessee Walker, and a donkey.

I didn't think we had any Tennessee Walkers here but there is a partbred that is doing endurance at the moment.

@JudyEv Nice! My youngest used to do horse shows often. It's been a while, but she is talking about doing one in the spring.

He will turn grey, hmm, thought he'd stay dark color. Cute fellow!

He might stay black but given that his mother is black, I'd expect him to go grey then eventually white.

I’m actually more struck by the cost on the larger horse. That’s amazing that is his mother and he is so dark. So is she gray from old age then?

Most grey horses are born black and lighten over the years. Old horses of any colour often begin to go grey around the muzzle and eyes.

I was about to say, that foal needs to put some meat on his bones, but given that he is only a week old, I guess he's doing okay. And thanks for explaining the cold-warm-hot blooded thing. A bit of horse trivia I never knew!

@JudyEv Wow, I did not know that either. But now that I look at the photo again, I can see how short his mother's lower legs are. Very interesting. Thanks for educating me on horses!

And did you know that his legs won't grow any more from his knees/hocks to the ground? The rest of him will but not his lower legs. So he'll be at least as tall as his dam (mother).

Mostly it's just black foals that might go grey as they age. They'll be white by the time they're old.
