Oh my goodness, this sounds gross also to me. I had alligator nuggets in Louisiana, but I would never buy a whole skinned alligator with the head on. I do not even want to buy a whole chicken with the head on.

I don't want one for sure! I suppose if a person was either very frugal or very hungry, he or she could cook the head and there would be a bit of meat on it, but it's all for the drama factor. Just to put on display ready to eat with the head on it looking like it might bite someone. If I am going to eat meat, chicken, or fish, I want the head to be gone.

@MarieCoyle I do not want to buy a whole animal with the head on, I am unable to eat or to cook. Even if I buy a rabbit I want it cut in pieces and no head.

@LadyDuck I know that some so-called fancy type of restaurants used to (and I think some still do) serve whole fish, with the head on. I love fish but when it hits my plate I do not want to look at the head and their eyes. Nope.

@MarieCoyle I'm sometimes an impulse buyer, lily at waiting at the cashier's, I'd see chips, not in my need list, but something is I enjoy, so I'll grab it. Though, no gators please.

@oahuwriter I have really curbed most of my impluse buying, which to be fair wasn't really a problem but I am trying to spend as wisely as possible. It seems most of the impluse/last minute buys I even consider or make, are items I would have bought at some point anyway, but I find on sale. Big thrill, huh? LOL

Well, since the only good part of the gator for eating is the tail, I would imagine this is meant to be more of a decorative piece than actual food for people to eat. Unless of course there are some backwoods country folk who think that any kind of killed animal is a good source of meat. haha

@MarieCoyle It wouldn't deter me one bit. When I'm hungry, I'll eat anything! lol

I just think the appearance alone would be enough to not want to eat anything at all.

@moffittjc I don't consider myself a very picky eater by any means. But there are certain things I just don't want on my plate, the head of an alligator is now one of those things!

@TheHorse My Dad liked to fish. When we lived by the ocean, he fished a lot. In the midwest, it was usually the Great Lakes with his brother and our families. Lots of fun, way back in the day. One time he went with just his brother to fish in the Mississippi. They each caught several ''mud cats'' that they iced down and hauled home. They were absolutely nauseating! Tasted just like mud smells.....they threw them away and never did that again. I still remember the look on his face when he tasted it!

I honestly did think it was a lot like chicken. In all fairness, the alligator I had, the times I tried it anyway, was farm raised. I often wondered if the alligator was wild and lived in those swampy places, wouldn't it taste like a swamp? Maybe, maybe not. I didn't want the wild stuff in this case.

@MarieCoyle Living in the country growing up, we saw alligators in the pond behind my grandparents house. And so much more!

Yes, I have had both fried and grilled alligator ''bites'' that did taste like chicken. But I have no desire to see the entire critter displayed on the table.

I have never heard of selling alligator like that. But like I said, I bet many buy it for the drama effect.

Whoever is eating them without feeling gross, is doing the world a favor. Do you know how many baby alligators can be born at one go...20 to 50! If nobody eats them, they will be eating all of us...in no time...I hate vets who are concerned about them, and I hate conservationists who think they are on the brink of extinction....it is we the human race who are at the brink of extinction, what with nuclear power all around us. They can survive in the seas...

I would, just to try it is weird for me though. Last Time I saw a alligator and only time he was hunting me. I hate the east coast. Just kidding I had a blast but we all know I better on west coast far far away.

@MarieCoyle Indeed, they say it tastes like its looks. Gamey and swampy. They to high strung for the meat to taste good. That's what I heard I have never had it. To me its like what they say about a rattle snake only in survival other wise make them for your boots..

No way, not at all appetizing to me. Do beef eaters look for something with an ugly cow's head on it, I think not. They have taken this too far, it is in very poor taste. That was a pun.

It does seem something of a niche item. But it's quite common to cook a whole salmon so I suppose why not a whole alligator?

I don't know, considering 85 ratings seems like there are more than a few "interested bellies" out there. I have had alligator as well in certain variations and my thoughts are mixed on it. I think I would prefer not seeing the whole alligator if I am going to eat it, personally. But most people who like it do say alligator is very good so it would not surprise me if there are many interested buyers. People eat a lot of animals that are a bit "off the grid," why not this?
