Another cute, long-legged foal

The photo shows another new-born foal with its mother. In a previous post, I was telling Jeff Moffit (@moffittjc) that the legs of a foal don’t grow much after it’s born. In the photo, you can see that the forelegs of the foal are much the same length as the dam’s (mother’s). Once the hoof fully develops as an adult, the foal will be at least the height of the dam. So, for quite some time, the foal will have to spread its legs to be able to nibble grass. The back legs look especially long. This little fellow is probably destined to a life as an endurance horse. He has been named after his owner’s father – William George – but will be called George, same as Eva James’ (@wolfgirl569) horse.

He got his name a better way than my punk did At about a year old you can measure from the center of the knee down to the hoof of the front leg and have a very close idea of the height at full growth. Each inch equals a hand.

@JudyEv As we knew the exact breed date we knew the due date. At about 2 week over I told his mom that if she didnt show me that baby in the next few days I was naming it George or Georgette. She waited about another 2 weeks

I meant to ask - how did your George get his name? Is there a story there?

Young things are always so cute... and then they grow up. Some of them remain handsome/beautiful and others look like their parents.

@DaddyEvil Oh definitely. I'd much prefer a puppy or kitten to a human baby.

He does look a bit gangly. He is very young there. Today he is probably trotting around the paddock.

Oh wow, that's really interesting about the legs. With cats I've noticed it's the eyes, they seem really huge when they're babies but they grow into them and with dogs it seems it's their ears. Both horses are beauties. Is the foal female or male?

The thing about paws is that when they're babies they have really tiny paws and they grow for at least the first 6 months. As for ears, when I caught Mykey, he was about 6 weeks old, he had huge ears and he did grow into them but even the ears do grow some during their first 3 months.

It's a colt (boy). I was told that dogs grow to fit their paws but it could well be ears as well.

Another beautiful photo of horses! This is a great shot showing the side by side comparison of their lower leg size. It just blows my mind that the lower legs don’t really grow anymore after they’re born.

@JudyEv It's just weird that the upper half of the leg and the hoof will continue to grow, but not the lower leg. Nature can be very interesting sometimes.

@moffittjc If you mentally move the knees up level with the mum's then the top of the leg doesn't grow much either.

That's true. It blows my mind too but you can see that by the time the hoof is full size the legs will be about the same length as the mother's.

In the next stall, there was a grey lying down and four Border Collie dogs - all flat out as though they'd all had a busy, stressful night!

Little George is so gorgeous! It must be uncomfortable being a pregnant mare, with those long legs kicking around. And they have to put up with it for 2 months longer than us!
