Meanwhile, Back at the Waterfall….

After visiting the underground waterfall Ruby Falls I went for the more “traditional” waterfall at DeSoto State Park in northeastern Alabama, not too far from Chattanooga. The area, known as Sand Mountain, is home to some of my favorite country musicians (the Louvins, the Maddox Brothers and Rose, and the Delmore Brothers), as well as the hometown of the popular band Alabama.
Oh, and some great scenery, too!!!
I was going to DeSoto State Park when I saw a sign pointing toward DeSoto Falls, and that’s all it took. The state park will have to wait for another trip.
A.A. Miller built a dam above the falls in 1925 to provide electricity for the area from sunset until midnight. (Good thing the only Tesla back then was Nikola!
) After electric irons became popular, electricity was also fed to homes on Thursday afternoon so women could iron. (Unreal to think of such a thing today, isn’t it.)
Below the dam there are two parts to DeSoto Falls. The first is a twin cascade that falls about 10-15 feet, then the “big show” where the fall is over 100 feet into the water below.
The stop allowed for some great viewing from multiple angles as well as more late-season foliage in the gorge. Because of the drought I was able to get much closer to the cascades than would be possible during the rainy season.
That was a magnificent follow-up to Ruby Falls, making last Thursday a waterfall day!

That area of the US is really beautiful. Haven't' been to Ruby Falls in years, but have traveled to the area to sightsee for leaves and such. Worth the trip.

You will get no argument from me! I wanted to see Brasstown Bald in Georgia (the highest point in Georgia) during the foliage season but I didn’t get down there in time due to doctors appointments and the like. Chattanooga and Sand Mountain were a little past peak but still stunning. That was the first time I’d ever been to Ruby Falls.

I was there a few years back when they got a super pretty snowfall, it was really beautiful then, too.

I am, too. I look at things like this and all I can think of is the chorus to the hymn “How Great Thou Art.”

How terrific! I would just sit in front of your garden all day! I don’t mind high waterfalls if I don’t have to get near a ledge to see them. There was a solid barrier on the walkway to see the drop waterfall (lower left), so that didn’t bother me. I have acrophobia, so I don’t want to be where I have to look straight down over a cliff at them.

I also suffer of acrophobia. I took this photo from my "computer room". I have the same view from our bedroom. This is a noise that I like so much to hear during summer, when I keep the windows open.

Ah, Ruby Falls and Chattanooga!!! You opened a pile of great memories for me. I drove from Memphis to Chattanooga once a week for almost 10 years and saw all the sights--many breathtaking!!

Were you stationed at NAS Millington? Lots of great sites along I-40, and that drive on I-24 west out of Chattanooga along the Tennessee River is among my favorite drives in the US that I’ve done.

Oh, I’m sorry, didn’t mean to make you homesick. But I hope the photos are letting you enjoy the beauty at least!

I’m sure the rest of DeSoto State Park is nice, but this suited me just fine, thank you.

Very lovely waterfalls, I enjoy seeing waterfalls. The couple of times I have been to Niagara Falls I have always been mesmerized by the tumbling water,

Niagara Falls is in a class by itself. I’ve been there twice and it’s overwhelmed me both times. But I don’t pass up any other waterfall I can find.

Well, back in 1925 the women generally didn’t work outside of the home so they wouldn’t have had to rush home to do their household chores. Being a “housewife” was their job.

I got there at the right time, too, to catch the sun in the gorge. Glad you liked them.

I’m so glad you enjoyed the photos. Nothing like actually being there, but it does give some indication as to how pretty it was!
