Strange Pub Names

Pub Names

While ambling around the city, this morning, I spotted these two pubs with strange names. The first was called The Wild Monkey and seemed to be part of a hotel and the second is the Theodore Bullfrog. About ten years back, I thought a pub called The Slug and Lettuce was a strange name, but there seems to be a competition for who can come up with the weirdest. I prefer names like The Cat and Fiddle or Shoulder of Mutton! I didn’t stop in either as I wanted to get home and have a cup of tea, after feeding some cats, of course!

The UK has over 47,000 pubs so a few unusual names are bound to happen. You found a few good ones there. Here are a few more I found: Bunch of Carrots, Hereford The Cat & Custard Pot, Kent Poosie Nansie’s, Ayrshire The Case Is Altered, Middlesex The Moon Under Water, London The Drunken Duck, Cumbria The Bull and Spectacles, Staffordshire The Gate Hangs Well, Leicester My Father’s Moustache, Lincolnshire The Strawbury Duck, Bolton Muscular Arms, Glasgow The Jolly Taxpayer, Portsmouth The Leg of Mutton and Cauliflower, London I have gone to a place called The Sitting Duck; a pretty mild name compared to these other pub names.

@Ronrybs I am sure that you are right. I remember when I was young that many Italian "trattorie" (a sort of very simple restaurant) posted the photo of some available meals, to let people know that it was a place where you can have food.

I think the name told you that food was available and going back in time, most people could not read, so a picture gave the clue

After half an hour in a pub, a phone is too small to use!

I loved all the pub names in England and Ireland. We don't seem to have as many here although we do have The Moon and Sixpence in the city.

@Ronrybs I've no idea. I'd forgotten it was a book title. I was thinking it was Irish.

According to my book, that name comes from a book title by Somerset Maugham. Wonder why they choose it?

@FayeHazel The regulars are Tommy and Missy, then there is Flurry who pops by sometimes and Mr Grey, who is becoming a frequent visitor

Are these fairly new pubs with the stranger names? A lot of effort to come up with those names. I read the Eagle and Child is for sale now in Oxford..took my son there many years ago just in to have a look where Tolkien used write.

I saw a pub recently called The Library which of course makes popping out for a drink sound quite legit. I don't like it when pubs get their names changed all the time. One round here has been through a whole sequence of name changes including The Pub which was just silly because of course if you say 'I'm going to the pub' people immediately ask 'which one?' I think it has finally reverted to its original name.

I liked it when pub names meant something; some historical reference to the usual clientele for example, like the Miners Arms, or to some family crest such as the Bear and Ragged Staff or whatever, not just some silly name made up to attract attention.

There are some pub names I like, especially the traditional ones. Most of these modern, marketing dream, names are rubbish!
