Japanese weasels are an endemic species in Japan. They can be found on most Japanese islands, in beech forests, grasslands, and in some villages. They spend their day in their dens and hunt at night. In the winter they go into hibernation. These weasels have orange-brown fur and small triangular heads. Japanese weasels are good hunters. They dine on small mammals like mice and reptiles, amphibians, insects, and fish. Basically, they are omnivores. They are solitary animals except during mating season. They’re very territorial and aggressive when it comes to defending their homes. They release a potent dose of musk to deter attackers. Japanese weasel mate from early May to late June. If there is an abundance of food, they might mate until August, producing a second litter. The litter of pups varies from two to twelve, but on average there are five or six. Females raise their young by themselves as the males leave once mating is over.
