When I announced this last week I’m pretty sure this is one of the first songs that popped into your head. And, truthfully, no countdown that features songs that made the pop charts with a religious theme could be complete without this one. Here’s today’s tune. #2: Jesus Is Just Alright - Doobie Brothers I really hope nobody thought I’d forget this one!!! As you can imagine, this is a cover. You don’t expect to run into a biker band named after marijuana slang at church. (Although, truth be told, that was part of the appeal of the “Jesus movement”: God isn’t just for people in suits or dresses with short hair, and that includes biker bands named after marijuana slang.) What I didn’t know until researching this is that the Doobies more or less borrowed their arrangement from another long-haired rock band: the Byrds. The Byrds’ version was recorded in 1969, and that sort of made sense, given that they’d covered the Louvin Brothers’ “The Christian Life” on Sweetheart of the Rodeo. The Doobies’ version is on an album with a title song about a “house of ill-repute.” Only in rock and roll. This has become a favorite of believers and non-believers alike. Jesus Is Just Alright Written by Arthur Reid Reynolds Recorded by the Doobie Brothers From Toulouse Street, 1972 I don’t care what they may say:

I must listen to it later. I don't have time now but I don't think I know this. And I thought of a great theme for you (Of course it's great - I thought of it! ) What about songs with 'jeans' in the lyrics? I can think of three.

I’ve never delved into lyric content yet, keeping it with the titles. If I run out of things (I’ve been at this for nearly seven years) I’ll definitely give you some “blue jean baby” lyrics.

@JudyEv — the ones I can think of are “Jean Genie,” “Jeans On,” and that horrid country song “Baby’s Got Her Blue Jeans On.”

@FourWalls There might be enough with 'jeans' in the titles.

Yes, I know this one. So sad about Christine McVie. I loved her singing.

This countdown wasn’t that painful, was it?! I think Christine McVie could sing laps around Stevie Nicks and I think generally her songs were better. Very sad to hear about her passing.

@FourWalls No, this countdown was cool. Yes, I preferred Christine over Stevie too.

This song has been embraced by some churches, even here in the southern US. The youth choir at the church I used to attend performed it on stage at the annual homecoming celebration some years ago. It was also performed during the talent show at the Catholic school where I teach now. If the message is there, it will find its way in.

It’s great that it has been accepted. I remember reading some of the stick-in-the-mud evangelicals rejecting this song because it was “rock and roll.” I mean, I know where they were coming from, because that’s what I was raised in, but...

It’s one of those that plays on classic rock and I guess “they” assume everyone knows the name of every classic rock song by now so they never identify it.

This is another song that I forgot that I knew! As soon as the music started, I recognized it and could even sing along.

I know the feeling, believe it or not. There’s just so much music out there that you don’t know it’s seeped into your system until you’re reminded. Have a great day!

As I get older I’m thinking I like the Doobie Brothers a lot more than I thought I did in the 70s. Glad you enjoyed the song!

As you said a "no brainer" on any religious song list! Listening to this rockin' tune, Hallelujah ... "Jesus, he's my friend..."
