Don't walk your dog in the heat of the day

You might wonder at the title but I'm an Aussie and it's getting hot here. I’ve been reading about the cold weather in the discussions of my northern hemisphere friends. Snow, chilly winds, horrible wind gusts seem to be the order of the day now. Here, in sunny Western Australia, it’s the beginning of summer and we’re expecting a balmy 31C/89F here today. The Sojourner (@TheSojourner) has been talking about poor Cooper’s efforts to cope with the snow when he needs to go out to do his business. And it reminded me of a comment someone posted on a FB site, saying not to walk your dog between the hours of 10am and 6pm (that may not be the exact times) or, if you do, to wear a fur coat and go barefoot so you know what your canine friend is experiencing. This makes such good sense as you could fry an egg on our pavements some days and it must really burn a dog’s feet. Photo is mine of poor old hangdog, Pepper, at our last house-sit.

You're being evil and teasing us with the sunny skies and 89F/31C temps, Judy... Yeah, furbabies don't like the extreme heat or cold, either.

@JudyEv If I could, I'd send you the 39F/4C that we're experiencing right now.

@DaddyEvil I used to get up JJ's nose by telling him what wonderful weather we were having. Maybe you'll have to be the brunt of my sniping now.

We haven't had a dog for ages and ages but I must admit walking on hot ground isn't something I'd really thought about.

@JudyEv My sons used to take the dog early in the morning and after sunset in summer when he was in India. Now he is with my younger son in Copenhagen.

It was supposed to be colder in our place too but the past few days we have had very sunny and humid days. So it doesn't feel good to be out unless you stay in AC places. Hopefully, in the coming days, climate would change to where it is supposed to be at this time of they year.

Are you nearer the sea perhaps? That makes for a more temperate climate.

Yes, dogs need to either have booties on or to be walked on the grass when the pavement is hot. What a great picture.

Pepper, what a cutie. Very good advice. I hadn't thought of pavement being hot for poor dog feet before reading a similar article, but yeah wow, makes sense. Happy summer. So... Christmas happens in summer for you? That's interesting. :-)

Yes, in the southern hemisphere it's summer at Christmas. Lots of people spend Christmas Day at the beach, trying to keep cool.

That is a beautiful dog in the picture. I was lucky I had a fenced yard and I cleared a area for my dog to do his business and he came back in fast after he was done.

Pepper is a beautiful dog. But that is a very good point, dogs should be allowed to remain inside during the peak temperature hours and also during storms. I remember trying to take our dog outside to make busy just before a storm and I waited until the skies were too dark and the thunder and lightening scared her so that she could do what she should have. That taught me alot.

It's something that some probably don't think about - hot pavement and high temperatures when you have a furry coat. Lots of dogs are scared during thunderstorms.

Wild animals do not walk on pavements, but those who walk their dogs should know how hot it can be during the hottest hours in Summer. I have seen dogs wearing boots when it snows here.

@JudyEv It snowed up on the hills today, dogs do not like to walk in the snow, at least not dogs who have the habit to stay inside, wolves do not fear the extreme cold and the snow.

You can buy boots for dogs here too. Drovers often use them on cattle and sheep dogs if they are doing a lot of droving work.

@JudyEv True. It's not good to walk when it's hot. I've seen dogs with their heads down and their tongues lolling because they were so hot. It's not fair to the dog.

It's not something I would have thought much about although I wouldn't like going out myself if it were too hot so i wouldn't have taken a dog out them.

As you say, not a problem here at the moment. i know during the summer, most of the cats were napping in the sun until it got too hot

Cats seem to love to sleep in the sun. I love how their fur gets so warm after they've spent time in the sun.

@TheSojourner has been getting hit with bad weather this year. As for fur most dogs are ok it is their feet if you walk on anything but grass or dirt. And even dirt can get pretty warm.

I must agree with this because when it gets hot here in Florida, the sun feels like fire. I did one time see something interesting. I guess the dog had to go but it was hot this was during the summer, and I saw a woman walking her dog with an umbrella attached to the leash just above his head so the sun would not heat him,

That was nice of the woman but his feet might still have been burning. Maybe she couldn't walk him at a better time of the day.
