Re-branding for a recession

So the cost-of-living ‘crisis’ is filling the news here at the moment with reports of prices continually going up, largely driven by the increased costs of fuel which of course affects everything, as well as other things such as shortages of fertilizer due to the war in Ukraine. So a lot of people are having to think more carefully about what they spend. In response to this I might have expected shops to make their goods look more expensive and therefore better value for money. So I was surprised recently when I went to pick up some own-brand shampoo of the type we often buy. As shown in the picture, ‘matching’ shampoo and conditioner are available, but we only needed the shampoo this time. I knew what I was looking for but I found the labelling to be totally different – instead of the previous label which was fairly simple but still made to look tempting with its colour pictures of fruit, the new version was as basic as can be and renamed ‘everyday’ instead of the previous ‘fresh and fruity’. Apart from the label, the contents, size and price are just the same as before. So presumably they must be working on the assumption that consumers are now looking for ‘value’ items and cutting out anything that looks too ‘luxurious’! Have you noticed any rebranded items? Hmm... maybe that's why a couple of items I always bought have "disappeared" now. I look for labels I recognize. If the label changes, then I won't recognize the product as the same as what I'd previously been buying. Maybe I'd better check the products more carefully now.

The only thing I have noticed is that the products get smaller and the price increases.

In my opinion they changed the label because some silly people drank the liquid thinking it was a refreshing drink. Looking at the photo before reading your post I thought that the one on the right was a drink.

@Fleura The law has changed recently here, many non food labels had to be changed not to be confused with something to eat. Also all those candles shaped like candies are now forbidden.

I guess that's possible but I would be surprised because the fruity label has been in use for many years, and plenty of other types of shampoo and other cosmetics have 'tasty-looking' labels too!

@LadyDuck I'm sure that's a good idea. I haven't come across candles like that but soap often looks as if it should be edible!

Isn't that interesting? I guess the manufacturers are working on the assumption that, if people think it looks cheaper, then it is cheaper.

I guess so, it's funny because it's exactly the opposite of what I would have expected, but I suppose the marketing people know what they are doing!

@Fleura I'm sure some people will find it very hard to change their shopping habits.

I am not sure if I have seen any more rebranding than usual. Things are constantly rebranded. That's just an age-old marketing ploy to add excitement to one's purchasing decision. But perhaps value is something more appealing these days considering the circumstances? Probably so, and that too would likely be smart marketing.

I know things are often re-branded, but usually to make them look more appealing rather than less!

@Fleura Marketing is appealing to the trend. If the trend is value, that's what they will market to until the trend is something else.

That's interesting. I haven't noticed it, though.

I wouldn't have noticed unless I was actually looking to buy the same thing I had bought before. I haven't noticed anything else but then I haven't looked!

It's not at all is it, it makes you think it's a 'no-frills' product I guess.

@Fleura Or doesn't work as well as one with more appeal.

The cost in printing the label was reduced greatly by using less colour, less fonts, less words, less picture - whoever thought of this is very smart. By doing so, they manage to keep the price of the product the same.

I have not noticed them but I need t start looking because when items are rebranded, the previous items are usually on mark-down or closeout shelves and I like to stock up!
