Time for Vince to put the girls to bed

We have seven chooks (chickens) to look after at this house-sit. We let them out of their big yard at about 10am by which time they have finished laying their eggs. They have a water-trough which fills automatically and a self-feeder which we top up with wheat every few days. When we let them out they make their way over to the orchard area and spend their day fossicking round the edge of the garden or under the trees. They can’t get over the fence into the garden itself. At about 6pm, Vince goes out, and he and the chooks head back to their yard and they are shut in for the night to keep them safe from foxes. Vince talks to the chooks and believes he is quite conversant in ‘chookese’. Certainly they make little chicken sounds back to him. In the photo, there are six hens. The 7th came running up just after I took the photo.

Obviously the chookese, I used to speak it when I lived in countryside as a little girl and my mother raised some chickens, I accquinted some typical chookese like "come to eat""go away"

I lov this photo. The hens seem to follow him, they know that it's bed time for them. They seem to love what the tell them in chookese.

@JudyEv Hens are smarter than we think. I have a good friend who is a vet. She told me that a woman brought her hen for a check up. The woman told to the hen to jump on the table and keep quiet because the vet had to look at her and the hen did what she asked.

Once it's time to go to bed, they are hanging around the gate waiting for us to take them over to the pen. It's very cute.

@LadyDuck That is pretty funny. I'm sure the more time you spend with an animal the more it understands.

I like reading your posts with the strong features of countryside.. I recall those days when I was in the countryside as a little girl when my mother raised some chickens, from hatching them out and raise them up as old chickens. I have a strong bond to them, loved them much, when one of the hen was to be killed I hugged it all the way to my uncle's and shed tears. I loved them so much. Thank you for reminding me the beautiful days in my memory.

I did that too and the chickens (which were bantams, so smaller than regular chickens) used to come running to me and fly up to perch on my shoulders!

It is really sad when a pet has to be killed. We never killed our pets but I can understand that sometimes it has to happen.

@Fleura We had a lot of bantams on the farm plus a few that we reared by hand and which became very quiet and friendly.

Uhm... you haven't been locking Vince in with them at night and that's how he's become so conversant in chookese, have you?

Vince is nuts about the hens too. I like them but having been brought up on a farm I can sort of take them or leave them.

I wondered what happened to number seven. Fossicking? I know what it means but I betcha others don't.

I've explained it lots of times and it's usually pretty obvious so that's it for me. People can look it up in future. It's such a common word here I can't believe it's not known elsewhere.

@Treborika Fossick means to rummage or search around. It was often used in the gold rush days about men 'fossicking for gold'.

The Isa Brown chickens are very calm and friendly. They make great pets. These seven are laying 4-6 eggs a day so they're doing well.

We've had done a few house-sits now and mostly it's for friends or friends of friends. We don't charge. There seems to be a need for it and we like to get out of the city.
