Expiration dates

I remember when I was a child there were no dates on the eggs. My mom just bought them and put them in the egg place in the refrigerator. We ate them and no one ever got sick. Now I am seeing a date on the egg carton's when I buy them. So what's the point of having the egg slots/places in the refrigerator? The lunch meat is dated to be good like 3 or 4 months away, so I buy it. Go home and make a sandwich and read that after it has been opened I see where it say's that after the package is opened the meat has to be used within 5 days! So now I have to find a ride back to the store in 5 days!!!!! I bought a bottle of Coffeemate liquid creamer as I have done many times before for years and opened it and started using it about a month and a half ago. The next time I went to the store I got a second one just in case I used up that one. The first one didn't have an expiration date on it and the second one did of 08May2023. I made a cup of coffee this morning and put cream in it and it tasted fine, like it always did. However I was wondering how to find out the expiration date on that bottle of cream so I looked up and called the Nestle company. The recording said that after opening do not use after 14 days!!!! Huh? I have never had a problem before as long as I used it before the expiration date. I poured out that cup of coffee as well as what was left in the bottle. As if we are not already putting out enough money as it is for food they are setting us up to have to go buy more! I am on disability and get some food stamps too, I can't afford to be buying so much food. So if I buy a pack of lunch meat I will be eating mostly just that during 5 day's so it doesn't go to waste. Boring!!!!!!!

If things are left closed they are good until expiration date, but if you open them they spoil. The coffee cream becomes "sour cream" it's not dangerous but it tastes horrible in the coffee. The eggs are fine if used to make cakes or pasta even after the expiry date, but NOT if you use them to make a mayo, you could get salmonella.

I keep everything covered. But my daughter that is very picky about the expiration dates doesn't!!!!!! She won't let me feed her son the milk or will cook anything if it's dated for that day. I keep telling her that it's good till 11:59 PM!!!!!! I don't like sour cream anyway! LOL

@dfollin - I smell and taste, if the taste is still good and I do not feel suspect odor, it's still good to eat. For the eggs, you can place in a jar full of water, if it floats, better not to use.

Even after the dates there is some usage beyond. Look it up on line. I think it makes a difference too if it says expires or Best Buy.

Yes I understand the difference between expires and Best By. I mean like, today is 01/11/2023 and I buy lunch meat that is dated to expire 04/03/2023. So I buy it and open it, close it back up then see that because I opened it I am being penalized because there is a note that if you open it you have to eat it within 5 days. I either have to eat lunch meat for breakfast, lunch and dinner for 5 days or I have to throw it out, spend more money or food stamps to buy more after I find a ride.

It is really strange how those expiration dates change. I go on line and find out how long foods are good for after the expiration date. Some of them are a lot longer than we would think they would be.

Yeah and my daughter won't even let me feed her child milk on the exact date. Like we had milk that was dated for today and she dumped it out last night.

I remember the days when there were no expiration dates on anything. We went by rule of thumb meaning if it smelled okay and tasted okay it was fine to eat/drink. I still go by the smell test even now

We mostly did too. I still smell and check stuff even though it is not even that date yet.

I don't pay a lot of attention to expiration dates unless the food smells or tastes bad. Sometimes I think the dates are there just to make people throw out good food and buy more.

You can freeze the lunch meat in little packets and use it up as needed.

If you have always drank and ate these things past th e expiration date why start tossing them now and wasting money. They legally have to have sell by dates on them and use by dates on them but most things last way longer. Eggs last about two weeks past the date stamped on the carton. The only thing that has ever made me sick past the expiration date is yogurt. My mother can eat it for months past but if I even go a day past I get really sick. Happens every time so I just know better and don’t do it anymore. Lunch meat I give a week if it’s not eaten by then I toss it. The fresh deli cut stuff goes bad faster then the prepacked stuff.

No, no, no! You misunderstood. I don't eat stuff past the expiration date unless there is a secondary rule. Like the milk is usually good for 5 days after the expiration date. Now sometimes I have got milk that has spoiled before the expiration date. But this doesn't happen too often I think about 4 times in my 61 years! No this is on the pre package lunch meat and cheese too.
