Gee, will you look at the time? I’m late! Because of the cold weather (although it’s nowhere near as cold as it was before Christmas) I’m staying snuggled up at home. I was also chatting with my brother. But I’m here, and with me comes another song nominated for an Academy Award for “Best Original Song.” Here’s today’s tune.
Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head - B.J. Thomas
I hate movies like this. It’s like the TV show Daniel Boone, which was popular when I was little. There’s a statue of Daniel Boone at the entrance to Cherokee Park here, and I always told my mom when we’d pass it, “That doesn’t look anything like Fess Parker.”
Same here! Butch Cassidy didn’t look like Paul Newman! What’s up with that!!
Actually, that’s okay, because there’s a pretty fictitious ending to the movie. At the end, they attack like “brave he-men.” In reality, Cassidy shot the Sundance Kid (real name: Harry Longabaugh) to end his suffering after being mortally wounded by the posse, then Cassidy shot himself. That doesn’t make for good Hollywood endings, so….
This song became a huge hit for B.J. Thomas, and was one of his two #1 pop hits (the other being “[Hey Won’t You Play] Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song”). With its popularity, an Oscar victory was a shoo-in.
In addition to the song Oscar, the film won Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, and an Original Score for Bacharach (this moving giving him two of his three Oscars, with the third being for the previously-used “Arthur’s Theme”). It was nominated for Best Picture, despite bad reviews when it was released, but lost to Midnight Cowboy.
Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head
Written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David
Recorded by B.J. Thomas
Oscar Winner
From Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, 1969

Daniel Boone and Fess Parker? Nope, no comparison! Fess Parker was too handsome to be a pioneer! Go Bert Bacharach:) Paul Newman? Again, he was too gorgeous to be Butch Cassidy! No wonder Joanne latched onto him:(

@kobesbuddy — yep, Paul Newman, too! And all those other good-looking men and women of the “golden era.”

@FourWalls And Fess Parker was before the times of plastic surgery and botox injections!

Hard to believe that song is as old as it is, isn’t it? How did it get so old while we’re still young?

Very well known at the time of the movie. I think it’s had some staying power, too.

My sister and I had lots of dolls that were meant to look like the people from movies and bands etc like new kids on the block. So rarely did they ever do a good job making the dolls look like the real person.
I’ve heard this song but I don’t recall where. Maybe when I worked in an old folks home.

@FourWalls hmm doesn’t seem likely that’s where I heard the song then I was thinking it was older but now that I see the date on it it probably wasn’t heard in the old folks home. That would be to modern for most of them who were born in the early 1900s.

Yes, we sang it back in the 60s, young lady.
It was popular and it’s had some staying power over the decades.

And John Wayne didn't look anything like Davy Crockett in the movie "The Alamo." That's Hollywood for ya
Great song by BJ, but not to be played while riding a bicycle.
Enjoyed both those nominated Western films, oh that's right Joe Buck was just playing a "Midnight" cowboy.

Oh, that Ratso Rizzo….”I’m walkin’ here!!!” (Improvised line, BTW)
That’s the way movies will spoil you. I will be a little disappointed if Moses doesn’t look like Charlton Heston, though.

@FourWalls That's a great line by Dustin, lol. Hmm, Charlton Heston you say, that would be an impressive sight.

After those two big hits he focused primarily on country, then gospel.
