How much are eggs for you?

A few weeks ago, I noticed other people talking about the cost of eggs with alarm. I hadn't noticed the price increase as much, and there are a couple of reasons for this. We already pay higher prices for eggs here in California due to certain poultry farm regulations that were voted on a few years ago, so seeing a dozen eggs for $3.50-$4/dozen wasn't that unusual for me. It's also been a while since I've bought a carton of eggs at a store -- I get free culled eggs from work pretty often, plus I also automatically get 2 dozen eggs included with the weekly produce order that is delivered to my house. But with the alarm in other people's posts about the price of eggs, I started investigating and noticed that they've gone up a great deal in my area too, or at least the "inexpensive" eggs have really increased in price. The pastured and organic eggs have gone up, but it's not as significant of an increase. At the store where I work, the least expensive eggs are $4.39/dozen. At a mainstream grocery store in my neighborhood (Safeway), the cheapest eggs are currently $4.99/dozen. The cheapest eggs at my local Walmart are $4.52/dozen. I'm not sure why my store has the better deal, as it's a much smaller company than the other two and largely sells natural/organic groceries, but perhaps they're currently a loss leader in order to draw customers. How much are you currently paying for eggs, and how much were you used to paying? While this seems like an American-centric post, I'm actually curious to hear about how much eggs cost in other countries too. Have you had to cut back on buying eggs?

I've seen a dozen eggs go for up to $7 around here. It is actually cheaper for me to order Eggland's Best than the store brand. . . or cage-free. I've been paying like $3.50/doz.

I think the most expensive eggs I've seen at work are something like $10/dozen, but they're the organic pasture-raised, small family farm kind of eggs that are usually out of my budget anyway.

Guess what. I found out on a FB group that Trader Joe's cage free eggs were going for $2.99 . . . today I went there . . . and that was indeed the price! That is the absolute LOWEST price for eggs I have seen anywhere . . . the cheaper ones being 4 something for a dozen minimally at other stores. There weren't a whole lot of them though . . . and I got there maybe a half hour after they opened.

@spiderdust I don't know how they're able to sell at that price when everyone else's is up.

@much2say I'm guessing that the farms that were hit with avian flu and had to cull entire flocks are the ones having to raise their prices. "Cage-free eggs" implies that the chickens have some space away from each other and may not have the same problems as the cheap egg farms. Remember about 14 years ago or so when we voted regarding the living conditions on egg and dairy farms in California? I think those changes are why we aren't seeing the drastic egg hikes that other states are right now.

I bought a pack of 18 for $2.99 at the Grocery Outlet a couple days ago. Safeway had Lucerne for $1.99 a dozen. The more organic, farm raised eggs are sky high. All the people around that raise chickens and sell eggs had to up their prices due to the price of feed. They are anywhere from $3.50 to $4 a dozen. Oregon has really gone up in some prices. Eggs depend on where you go.

@spiderdust That is just so crazy! I'm originally from California and was expensive for a lot of things then. I moved to Oregon in 2015 and now ready to leave here. Not sure where anything is cheaper now.

Grocery Outlet is usually a good place for me to find eggs (and other grocery items), but the cheapest eggs at the one near me right now are over $7.50/dozen!

To be honest, I know that the price of eggs has gone up, but I always buy the same brand - Eggland's Best. I only know that they were $3.99 the last two times I bought them.

@spiderdust I didn’t realize they were higher end eggs. We love them and have been using them for years. If that’s the case, I’d buy them instead of the other eggs.

I think that's one of the brands that hasn't gone up very much. It seems like the "higher-end" eggs aren't changing prices as drastically as the "cheap" eggs.

With such a huge variation in prices in the same location, I wonder who the businesses are buying their eggs from?

@spiderdust I don't know. I got some two nights ago at Walmart for $3.99 for Egglands Best and great value brand was $6.01. So it doesnt make any sense.

We are paying between $5-6 here. $8 for 18. That's at Walmart. Rediculous. Used to be about $3.

We used to pay $ 2.40 for a dozen at Aldi and now we pay $ 3.40. We almost never eat eggs, but I use eggs to bake cakes and pastries and to make pasta at home.

@spiderdust - I have some recipes of cookies that do not require eggs, I can also make durum wheat pasta without eggs, should I found none.

Are you investigating any egg substitutes for baking, just in case you can't find any on the shelf some day?

Have you adjusted how or what you eat based on the current egg prices? I'm thinking about stuff like chicken salad for breakfast now. By the way, I've noticed that canned chicken is scarce on the shelves these days too. I'm sure it's because of the avian flu. ',

At Aldis a couple of days ago we’re priced at over five dollars a dozen, I don’t remember the exact price, I think it was 5.65. I didn’t buy any. I had two dozen in my frige. I don’t know if I’ll buy eggs at that price.

Eggs are quite expensive in Hong Kong. It costs USD4 for 10 eggs. These are eggs imported from Japan. Eggs from mainland are a bit cheaper but not as large and delicious as Japanese eggs.

I'm going to investigate which egg substitutes work best for us for baking. I know of some, like using soaked chia seed, but I've also heard of people using corn starch.
