Cattle grids and bouganvillea

I’m sure these are used in the USA and UK but perhaps if you don’t live in the country, you may not have seen these cattle grids as they are called here. They are placed at gateways and enable vehicles to pass over them but not livestock. Cattle, horses and sheep do not regard the grid as safe and will not tread on the slats. The grid on this one is round piping but some use old railway lines or other material. Installing a grid means the farmer doesn’t have to open and shut gates but can just drive over the grid and continue on his way. There would normally be a gate to one side so livestock could go through if need be.

We call those cattle grids, too. And yes, they're all over in the countryside where I grew up.

@JudyEv Yes, for a while. One rancher that lived beside us had to install electric gates because his cattle learned to cross cattle grids. *shrug* He still just drove through. the electric gates swung open and closed at the push of a button.

They saved a lot of time really, not having to stop to open and close gates.

@DaddyEvil We visited a farm the other day and had to put in a code so the gate would open. I wonder how the cattle crossed. Maybe they just walked carefully.

So that is what its called. I think I have seen one in my place but didn't appreciate what the purpose of that one is.

@JudyEv Never realized that there is some reason why they place something like that. Now I know

@FourWalls It's bouganvillea. They come in a few different colours. You don't know them?

It's magnificent, isn't it? There is another one just as big to the left. I think I prefer this colour of all the colours available.

@LindaOHio We do but I'd rather be in the country - and I tell myself we're more likely to avoid covid at our house-sits.

I would love to have one for our gate. We unhooked the automatic gate openeer last year and havent hooked it back up. It's a pain when we want to park inside the gate

@thislittlepennyearns On our farm, we had to open and close a gate to get into the place. If'we went to the drive-in, I'd pretend to be asleep so my brother would have to open the gate.

I can't recall seeing them when we were overseas either but we didn't go on many farms. There might have been one or two on the minor roads in Scotland.

It's like a game, isn't it? Humans coming up with an idea; animals coming up with a solution.

We call them "cattle guards." At least I think we do. Maybe I've been mispronouncing it all my life.

It saves stopping to get out and open and close gates. Up north, people drive through properties and often leave gates open so this saves that problem too.

@JudyEv The grids would save a lot of time and effort. They probably have them here, I can’t remember the last time I saw a farm, after making that comment, my brother-in-law owns a cattle farm north of here but I’ve never been where the barn and cattle are. He might have those grids for all I know.

We had them all over growing up and they were called cattle gaps. To keep the cows from crossing. Very rough to go over one in the car or school bus. I remember them well. The bouganvillea is stunning.

The grids can certainly shake your teeth loose. Some seem rougher than others. I guess it depends on how far apart the bars are.

There are lots of those on one of the highways on the west side of El Paso County, the noise they make when I drive over them sounds really odd.

In our north, they appear on the highways to stop cattle moving off their own properties. Some are very rattly.
