Our friends' house has survived the bushfires

We managed to get some information about our friends’ house in Yabberup. We house-sat there for two different periods and dealt with the death of a pet sheep and fly-blown sheep. Their house has been in the centre of some big fires in the area that were started by lightning during an electrical storm. Although the bush all around them has been burnt, their house has been saved so that is very good news. The photo is of their house. Luckily there is open ground around it although the bush isn’t far away.

I'm glad their house survived the current fire... I think it would be terrible worrying about your house every summer. Let's hope it always survives the fires.

@JudyEv Maybe... Most freezers will keep the items frozen for a week or more as long as the seal isn't breeched. They could throw a big party and cook everything up for their friends and the firefighters.

@DaddyEvil Hopefully they are keeping it closed. I'm sure they know all about how best to keep it frozen.

They've been without power for several days so everything in their huge freezer in the garage would have to be thrown out.

@JudyEv I am glad their house has been saved. I am very sorry about the lost of the pet sheep and fly-blown sheep. What is the difference between the regular sheep and the fly-blown one? That is scary about the electrical storm. Is that the house you will be going back to house-sit?

We don't have plans to go back to this one for the moment. The fly-blown sheep was attacked by blowflies which laid eggs in the damp wool around the tail. The eggs hatch into maggots and eat into the flesh of the sheep.

@Hannihar We would go back if they asked us to and I'm sure they will if they need to go away one day.

@JudyEv That sounds terrible what happened to the fly-blown sheep. Thank you for the explanation. I understand that you do not have plans to go back to the place.

That's good news. How extensive was the bush fire?

Six thousand hectares have been burnt (nearly 15,000 acres). Much would have been bush but also a lot of farmland.

@JudyEv I hope some of the produce was already harvested before the fire. You can expect food prices to soar otherwise.

@BarBaraPrz That's true. A lot would have been bush but not all of it.

Good they had all the brush cleared away from their home. I like their porch.

Some love living in among the trees and bush but it can be a nightmare if there is a fire.

@JudyEv It can be very dangerous when the weathers dry and brush is combustible.

It's a lovely house and has been there a long time. Thankfully, they are safe now and, after such a burn, it should be years before they will be threatened in such a way again.

@JudyEv I saw the image as well, and it was scary to see that fires were only a short distance from their home.

I am glad their house survived. Surely having open ground around helped a lot.

Yes, that would have helped and having green lawn possibly helped too although the grass would soon frizzle and burn.

@JudyEv Having bushes and trees too close to the house would have been a problem.

Now that the area around has been burnt off, it will hopefully be a long time before another fire would be as fierce.

We have floods up north but they are subsiding now. It's the last electrical storm that has been responsible for all the fires here. Our cricketers are doing well, that's for sure.
