Yes, you can help me if I don't have a heart attack first!

So, the other day I was out buying some toilet paper. The package I wanted was one of the last two on the top shelf all the way to the back. Trying to reach that would have been a big problem for me. I am not short, but neither am I tall. Trying to find staff in that store is hard to do, I was thinking maybe I would stand on the shelf..when totally unbeknownst to me, a man shows up behind me and says almost directly in my ear..."Would you like me to get that for you?" I told him he scared me to death. He laughed and got the package down for me. Did anyone every surprise and scare you like that?

I know that is kind of why I haven't been wearing my earphones when I have been walking. I think it is good to be aware of my surroundings. Maybe I can put the volume on low. BTW, Welcome to Mylot. We need new people, cute cat.

@snowy22315 thank you, and yes i think having the volume low would be better because the woman that tapped thats what she wanted to aware me of my surroundings, always good to be safe

No, but I used to accidentally scare customer and staff at Walmart because I walk almost silently and if they don't notice me and I say something, they'd jump and some would scream... Them jumping and screaming would startle me... *sigh* I'm a big person and I don't know how they could miss me walking up, normally from their side. I try not to approach people from behind. I don't like to be startled and I don't like to startle other people.

@snowy22315 I am sure you did. I remember when I could not reach the TP on the top shelf, I grabbed a mop in another aisle and I threw the package down.

Yes, me too. I really didn't want to have to go in search of someone. That store sometimes you can go in there and literally not see anybody. They also have self check out so I have gone in there and heard people stocking somewhere, but not seen a soul I doubt they have securtiy cameras, you could probably steal them blind if that was your MO.

I'm glad he helped get that package for you. I always have that problem. I'm short and the items I need seem to always be on the top shelf. Finding a person to get it for me is a problem. As you said, the staff isn't around when you need them. I will ask someone taller than me to get it down for me.

I would have, but I didn't see anyone else in the store, until the "scarer" appeared.

@just4him Sometimes there may be no other alternative..unless you want to traverse the whole store to find an employee somewhere.

@snowy22315 There have been times I resorted to standing on the shelf to get to the top shelf and what I needed.

Eek I don’t think he should have gotten so close when he asked. I’m glad he was able to get it for you though. Sometimes I ask taller people for help but usually I just climb.

That was the thing, he was practically on top of me, in my space so to speak. Maybe he thought I was deaf or something...no clue..but it was too close for comfort.

I'd be lying if I said 'no' but I do have a startle reflex, so.... it doesn't take much.

It reminded me of something my mom told me one time. She was in a store about to look at tag, when the stereo system came on really loud with somebody singing "Do you want to dance?" She lost it.

I've had to really stretch from time to time to reach something I wanted. Sometimes I can knock something over but towards me so I can reach it. I can just imagine how that guy scared you.
