Sell by date, Use by date, Do you pay attention?

In stores here in the US, almost every product sold that is refrigerated or frozen has that Sell by date and Use by date. Then I read an article the other day that said they really don't mean much. If the Sell by date has passed, they should no longer be available, but that Use by could be important, especially if the item has any meat or dairy content.
So I am wondering, do products in other countries have those dates?
Do you pay any attention to them anyway? I am a little cautious about foods, more so than my wife, Anne.

@JamesHxstatic Those dates are not being used on some stuff now here. Don’t tell my wife though or she might emigrate to somewhere more rigorous.

@JamesHxstatic We have the "expiry date" on some products like salt and honey. This is ridiculous, those products never expire.

When it comes to meat and dairy, I'm careful about the Use By dates. I remember learning at some point in the ancient past that most dairy is good for at least 7 days past the Use By date. Any meat we aren't using the day we bring it home goes into the freezer.

Sounds like a good idea. I do like those "use or freeze by" dates on meat.

I ignore "sell by" dates completely. They only apply to the store and when they want foods out of the store and nothing at all to do with the consumer. The "use by" date only matters when we're talking about meat and dairy. In the case of canned or dehydrated foods, dates on them don't matter at all. The ONLY time you worry about something canned being bad is if the can is dented or is rusting. The only time you worry about dehydrated foods going bad are if the food has been exposed to moisture. If the package is still sealed, dehydrated foods are good forever.

@JamesHxstatic One friend, when I worked at Walmart, came over for dinner one night. When she found the box of pasta I'd used was out-of-date, she refused to eat anything on the table. I laughed and told her to look in the fridge and see if she wanted to eat something else that was prepared. I won't cater to silliness.

@JamesHxstatic Exactly. I have no problem eating yogurt that's a few days beyond the Use By date. I know the lawyers are C'ing their A's.

@TheHorse Yogurt will last almost forever if it has no fruit in it.

I usually pay attention to the use-by dates but have found that if the date passes and within a week I still can eat the product everything is good. I guess it is also important to note how the product looks, smells, and tastes. Online they say
The Truth About Expiration Dates Use-by dates represent the last day that the manufacturer recommends consuming the product for quality reasons . "Like best-by dates, this can relate to taste, texture, and even appearance of a product, but these foods can still be considered safe to consume afterwards,

Yes, we have them here. I certainly attention to 'use by' on meat and dairy products but often I go by smell, looks and/or taste. I think there is a certain leeway allowed with the dates. I'm also hearing that some dates are false to encourage people to throw out and buy new.

If you've been reading my posts lately, you know that my family eats a lot of foods that have passed the "sell by" date. I do try to use them quickly after bringing them home or to freeze them if I can't use them right away.

@JamesHxstatic I try. Sometimes I let something go a bit too long and we have to throw it away, but at least when that happens it's not something I spent money on, so I feel a little less guilty.
