A Delicious Dinner

Tonight, K was in the mood to cook a special dinner even though it was just the two of us for dinner. She cooked lightly breaded thin pork chops, crunchy baked broccoli, and spaetzle with onions, Swiss cheese, and Gruyere. The photo is spaetzle, a German egg noodle. Son2 brought this delicacy home from his summer in Germany. He and his girlfriend, who spent time in Denmark, have introduced K and I to some wonderful dishes we might not have otherwise tried. Are you adventurous when it comes to trying new food?

I try new recipes when I have mood. Usually, I just make dishes based on my daily recipe

We usually eat the same basic meals night after night. K likes to mix things up once in a while.

@DWDavis mixing and add some new ingredients could make an ordinary turn in to extraordinary dishes

Yes, I am, but of course, I still look at the ingredients if it contains snake, dog, or monkey meat, I would not eat them no matter how delicious they are described by other people. I'm now experimenting on raw Japanese foods, so let's see what comes up.

Like you, I do examine the ingredients before trying a new food. How are you enjoying the Japanese dishes.

That sounds adventurous. I tried brisket tonight. It was way overcooked. Oh, well, won’t stop me from trying again!

@FourWalls It's not really his fault. My missus refuses to allow beef to be cooked in our house. Some years ago, she went off eating beef and Son1 doesn't want to upset her about it. There's no valid reason other than K suddenly decided she wasn't going to eat beef anymore. Pork, turkey, chicken, lamb, all are okay, just not beef.

My oldest son has spent years perfecting his brisket recipe. Sadly, those have been years he was in North Dakota or now in California. I haven't had a taste of it yet. He doesn't make it when he comes home to visit.

I do not like Spaetzle at all but my husband loves it. He buys it from a polish restaurant/store.

I've only ever had it prepared the way my son makes it, and, while I was skeptical at first, I found it tasty cooked that way.

K has always been willing to try new recipes. I grew up with a mom who had a weekly menu and stuck to it strictly, so I've had to learn to be more willing to try things.

Pretty adventurous, yes. My wife lived in Turkey for nine years as teacher for our Air Force families' kids. She learned a lot about Middle Eastern cooking and I love it.

Our Austrian friend made spaetzle for us when we visited her in Austria. I don't know if you'd call us 'adventurous' but we do try new foods. I steer away from anything too spicy.

I often make spaetle, that is also a very common Swiss dish and it's quicker to make than traditional egg pasta.

Our younger son spent a summer as an intern at the University of Stuttgart and learned to love the local cuisine. He brought home several recipes. HIs girlfriend spent a semester abroad in Denmark and came home with even more. My missus loves letting them loose in her kitchen to teach her how to make those dishes.

@DWDavis - Both my husband and I like some German dishes, but not many. The north of Switzerland is German speaking and they also have German cuisine. There are a few things I like of the Denmark cuisine, like the Frikadeller, but what I like most are the Danish pastries.

They were delicious the first and second nights. Tonight, the goodness is starting to wear off. My missus still cooks like there are two growing teenage boys living here with us. It tends to mean lots of leftovers.

Although I didn’t have a dinner nearly as good as yours, I do consider myself an adventurous person when it comes to food. I will try anything and everything, and there isn’t many foods out there that I can genuinely say I dislike.
