Bare Legs - A Problem ?

Seems like the problem lay with whose legs are being bared. Listening to a morning radio show I heard a complaint from a man who says he was denied entry to an establishment because he was wearing shorts - dress shorts he claims. He was told ( l find this amusing) that if he so desired, long pants were available for rental.. The man left and went back three days later - fully clothed. He feels however that men are not being treated fairly because women were allowed to enter the same building wearing skirts a few inches above the knees. " What's the difference?" he wanted to know. Do you think his question is valid? What about where you live. ? Must you adhere to strict dress codes before you can enter certain establishments? Image from Pinterest.

That's discrimination.

@Kandae11 When my daughter was small, she asked us why she had to wear a top when she swam but boys didn't.

@sallypup. Ha ha. Good question, men can go about with bare chests and women can't - unless on the beach - a topless beach.

It depends where you go. I am sure that men in shorts are allowed inside a cinema and in the grocery stores and malls. May be not at a formal evening or an elegant restaurants.

Definitely not at a formal event. Anyway were l in his position l would never consider renting the long pants - l am sure it was not brand new.

@LadyDuck that is a VERY good point. I have wondered the same thing. I see them all the time with bare chests and sometimes bulging stomachs. Women can't do that.

@Kandae11 Women are always more discriminated than men, so they should not complain.

I think a short dress could come under 'formal wear' while short pants are not - just saying.

Many fine restaurants won’t allow shorts. I prefer it that way. We once left our hotel when a family all wore jeans, cutoff jeans, and flip flops to a Christmas Eve dinner. We found a lovely French restaurant opened where everyone was dressed appropriately.

@Kandae11 They were disgusting! I don’t think they even took a shower after spending the day on the beach. The swanky restaurant was in a swanky hotel. People disgust me at times.

Wow! Now why would they dress like that for a Christmas Eve dinner? Was it a swanky restaurant?

I think shorts are appropriate so long as they're not short shorts and and not too high from the knee. Here you can't enter without a shirt if you're a man. He has a good point. Do you think these shorts are too short?!

He said they were dress shorts - just on the knees with four pockets. Can 't see a problem there. Maybe they are seizing an opportunity to make money with the rental of long pants. The rental fee he quoted was not cheap.

In India in office people have to wear fully covered clothes. Men full shirt and trousers and women something like that- A saree, salwar suit or jeans and T- shirt.

@Kandae11 That's true. Earlier there wasn't any need for such rules as people knew what to wear in which occasion. People these days are too experimental.

I think that dress codes are common sense. I would not enter a Church in shorts even as a tourist. And there are dress codes for marriages too. But some dress codes are a thing of the past here. Now people can go to the Opera in jeans.

@marguicha I am not religious but when I did go to church years ago I wore jeans. That’s all I had and I thought better to go and enjoy the sermon then not. I doubt cared what was on the outside of me only what is on the inside.

I would not wear shorts in church either. In fact l have never ever worn shorts of any length in public. However l have no problem with others who like wearing them.To each his own.

We don't go anyplace that won't allow me to wear shorts if it's warm enough weather for me to feel like I want to wear them... which, during the summer, shorts, a tank top and sandals are all I'm wearing. Any place that wants me to put on more clothes just lost my business for all time.

I have not heard of this before but I have seen men who look strange when they wear their shorts with coats or hats and scarves. I always thought that shorts were best worn in the summer with a lightweight t shirt or vest. These days they wear them all year round even in the very cold weather.

Shorts worn with coats or hats will look a bit strange. Here in the Caribbean it is warm or hot the year around , so people wear shorts or dress shorts a lot. You will also see lots of suits and ties too.

I guess that's up to the culture or rules we're living. I learn that in some places such as universities are required to wear formal clothes or casual. And no shorts allowed. I want to give more examples but I don't know how to explain those.
