Happy February!

Good morning! I have a day off from paid work today, but two kids are home sick from school and I am the available parent in charge, so it will not be a day (or even morning) off from work after all.
January always feels like a rough month. I think it's because the two months worth of holidays at the end of the year (Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's, and everything that falls in between) are officially finished, the pretty lights get put away, and we return to the drudgery of "real life". This year, my household dealt with natural disasters (although we fared better than most -- no mudslides or loss of property for us, just lots of wet) and a job loss (although again, we're faring better than most), as well as shifts in the household balance related to jobs and people returning to school.
Tomorrow, a whole bunch of people in Western Pennsylvania will witness a long-standing ritual where a particular rodent is held up to see if the dreariness will end soon. Will he predict an early spring? Probably not. His emergence from his den, however, reminds us that we're halfway through the hard part and that the dark part WILL end soon.

It really is harder, isn't it?

Not today, but it will be tomorrow (February 2). I grew up near Punxsutawney Phil, the most famous of the weather-predicting groundhogs.

That's very true. Winter is almost over. Soon we'll be springing forward and looking forward to summer. Glad things went well for you.

@spiderdust My husband is. He hates when we fall back. However, he's retired so it doesn't matter anymore.

@kaylachan I'd rather fall back -- we get an "extra" hour of sleep!

I remember your Candlemas post from last year! Did you enjoy your crêpes?

@LadyDuck Those sound so delicious. Do you use orange or tangerine juice for yours?

Good afternoon! It always sucks when kids don't feel well. I hope they feel better quickly.
I hope your family continues to do well...

I suspect one of them is actually fine, just wanted to get out of a class and went to the nurse's office instead and asked to go home. He seems completely fine and healthy, but he's bored out of his mind because I won't let him use electronics during school hours, so he feels that he has absolutely nothing to do... never mind that he's got books, a magic set, Legos, and other things to occupy his time, he wants video games and YouTube.
The other one has been in bed asleep all day and actually had a fever last night, and I believe is honestly ill.

One of the kids might be faking being sick? Surely not! I can't believe one of your kids would do that.

I hope the one that is really sick feels better soon. I usually sleep when I don't feel good, too.

@DaddyEvil They just used the oximeter that we have on hand (got it when a bunch of us had COVID) and registered a little low. Not in the concerning zone, but something to keep an eye on.

@DianneN I also take a vitamin D supplement because I know I'm prone to seasonally affected depression, and I think that helps.
Plus, look at how 2020 went, and we survived that. This is a walk in the park in comparison.

At least there's only 28 days to get through in February!

It is always good when you can look at disasters with perspective. My friend is on a train trip and noticed the homeless along the tracks. Her house is in perpetual remodel, but she says seeing the homeless made her grateful for what she has.

There are a lot of homeless encampments around here, and it's sad.

It certainly was a hard January here in these parts.
Yes let us see once again how the old rodent is.
Happy February to you.
Sorry your kids are unwell and I hope they will be better soon.

I suspect that one is merely playing hooky, but the other is definitely sick.

I do miss pretty winters. You've been sharing a lot of pictures of those, and I've enjoyed them so much.

Our weather is cold but not wet today. Actually, it's not even really cold anymore, it just still feels cold in the house and I haven't been able to get very warm. I've got my giant fleecy wearable blanket/hoodie on, and that's helping.

@CarolDM I hope in a month, I can go back to wearing short sleeves in the kitchen at work. Long sleeves may get in my way, but right now, it's just too cold without them.
