Is it a Good Song or is it Just Taylor Swift

I only pick on Taylor Swift because she's the latest big thing in music. But it is a general question I often think about. How many hit songs would be hit songs if someone else did them? As you know, I tend to listen to a lot of lesser-known artists and look around and usually find songs few people have even heard. While I have not posted one in a while, I have even done a bit of a series of sharing them. The thing is, what makes a hit song a hit song? How does a hit artist keep churning out one hit song after another? Is it that the songs are actually hit quality? Or is it just that the artist is famous enough that listeners are attracted to the song even if it would not be a hit if someone else did it—even if someone else did it just as well. Take any obscure song that is good and have Taylor Swift step into the booth and sing it. Will it suddenly become a hit? Most likely. So, if the SONG is good enough to hit when a hit artist sings it. Why would it not be good enough to hit if an unknown artist does? This is not to say that hit artists are not good at what they do, nor is it to say that their songs are bad. It just makes me wonder what is more important to a song taking the stage front and center? The artist or the song itself?

@porwest She has always just been a fad to me, she holds no interest for me at all. I mean I admire her ability to gather money, but that is about it.

@RebeccasFarm I am not a huge fan either, but I doubt you have never heard at least one song.

Taylor Swift is the latest big thing in music? Are you serious? Her first album came out in 2006. It is the year 2023.

Have you been too busy watching news about republicans? lol. Ticketmaster had to go before Congress over a disaster selling Taylor Swift tickets—her albums have sold more than any other artist and she tops the pay scale in proceeds. Right now she is the biggest thing in music. Where have you been?

@porwest Actually the biggest news in music these days is Beyonce's Grammy record and the announcement of her Renaissance Tour. Keep up.

The branding is really a big factor. Although I’m a Swiftie myself

Branding may have a lot to do with it, just like someone who won't eat anything but Kraft Macaroni and Cheese. They've simply been convinced it's better than anything else.

I think this with film stars who suddenly turn into novelists. I guess the name always helps them get started

@porwest It's the name that sells it first off. If it's a good book, then they're up and running.

Yeah. That's a big one. Even more interesting is that many of them don't even write their own books. They hire ghost writers to do it. But if you have some celebrity, your book will definitely be an easier sell than anyone without any name recognition at all.

I used to listen to all the popular songs, but I haven't really listened to music in years.

I still listen, but I listen to other stuff not necessarily in the mainstream most of the time.

It can go either way. I've seen an unknown race up the charts with a really good song. And sometimes they are "one-hit wonders".

One hit wonders are still a thing, but certainly not like they used to be.

It can be either but then I am a fan of songs that have become popular themselves and then made into hits by popular artists. You know I enjoy many different music genres but I am just not into Taylor Swift in fact I have never heard her sing. I guess I will have to listen to her but personally, I do not think she could stand up to the biggest female music stars through the years.

I have often thought the same thing. I'm not a huge Taylor Swift fan, but she does have some good songs. But there are other songs of hers that are big hits that I just don't get. I'm sure that if some unknown artist were singing some of those songs, they would never get any airplay. And I'm not knocking Taylor by any means. I just think that's how the business is.

She sn't the latest. She's been around for fifteen years. And she was way better when she first started. Shes annoying now.

I see what you're getting at, but I'm not sure that would be the only factor, although definitely a strong contributing one. There have been examples of artists whose original versions did better on the charts than covers by so called Super Artists. And vice versa of course. Probably another factor in my view is DJ airplay and now music videos which makes a song listened to by a wider audience. Then you have those one-hit wonders whose versions chart the best (even if covered later) for the original captures perfectly the trend at that time. But you make for an interesting debate.
