Vertigo

Yesterday at about mid-day my vertigo kicked in hard. It's been a long time since I've had it this bad. I felt nauseous most of the day from the dizziness, and it was hard to walk a straight line. I finally had to go to the store to buy some over-the-counter medicine to try and offer me some relief. The OTC stuff only offered some mild relief. And sadly, the side effect was that it left me feeling extremely fatigued and tired. I have a doctor's appointment next week, in which I will ask my doctor for the good prescription strength medicine, but until then I will have to deal with the OTC stuff. The vertigo is caused by my seasonal allergies. It doesn't always consistently hit me each year, and like I said above, it's been a long time since I've had it this bad. All I want to do is lie in bed and not move. Such a *blah* feeling. What makes it even worse is that I am taking my girlfriend to Disney World on Tuesday for Valentine's Day. I'll be fine walking around the theme park all day, but I'm a little worried about getting on the rides. Anyone else out there a vertigo sufferer?

Sometimes I have vertigo and have to grab a wall or a person walking close beside me or I will fall... It's always fun when Pretty and I are shopping. Because of possible dizziness, I'm the one who always pushes the grocery cart. When I start veering to the right, Pretty grabs the front of the cart and guides it down the aisle. When you see your doctor, ask if you can try some Meclizine 25 mg tablets. If I stay dizzy for more than a few minutes, I take one of those and it does help stop the dizziness. (You should try driving when you're dizzy. Left turns can make me start falling over into the passenger side front seat. When the turn is done, Pretty pushes me back upright. As long as I don't need to turn left again soon afterward, I'm usually fine.) Going on rides in an amusement park would be a no-no for me now. Good luck, Jeff!

@moffittjc I've only taken it two times so far but it does help. My problem is that we don't usually take any with us when we leave the house. I'm only supposed to take it if the dizziness lasts for more than a few minutes...

Meclizine is what my doctor prescribes me every time I get vertigo, so I’m sure within a week or two I’ll be on it.

I have had vertigo now and again ever since my concussion a few years ago. It is awful, and so frustrating when it is active. I feel for you and hope that you can get something to assist with it.

@moffittjc I saw something on the news recently about a possible way of ridding patients from vertigo. They strap the individual into a high back chair, and then they quickly turn it so it is leaning to the left, and then back again to normal and then to the right. The theory behind it is that it strikes suddenly and possibly the 'fix' would be just as sudden. I would say that the chair procedure looked awful for a normal person never mind someone who suffers from vertigo because it looked like a chair on a amusement park ride. And yes.....they did strap the individual in including their head.

It is awful, I hate when it hits me suddenly. It’s been quite a while since I last had vertigo, so I thought maybe it was all behind me. Nope, it had to strike right before my Disney trip.

No, I wish you the best of luck, though. Pace yourself and avoid rides that might trigger it.

If I was smart I would avoid rides that would aggravate my vertigo. But I never claimed to be smart. Stay tuned.

Glad I don't have vertigo. I had no idea you take pills for that. Do you get it often? I hope you will be okay when you go to Disney. It's awesome of you to take her to Disney. No plans here for Valentine's Day. Hubby is working and until 8 pm.

I’m taking Dramamine right now, which is helping a little bit, but soon I’ll be on Meclizine, a prescription medicine for vertigo. Then life will be good. Many years ago I would get vertigo every spring and every fall, but it’s been a very long time since I had any issues with it.

What were you taking? Dramamine? I get seasick and to be able to go out on the ocean I have to take so much Dramamine that it knocks me out and I fall asleep. It isn't even worth it these days for me to try to go out. The strange thing, though, is that my dad took me fishing on private boats, party boats, and even deep-sea fishing like 70 miles out and I wasn't sick as a kid. It was like a new thing in my 30s. Makes no sense.

Yeah, I’m taking Dramamine, and yes it about knocks me out. If I take one pill, it’s not enough to stop the vertigo, and if I take two, it knocks me out. So I take one and a half and it seems to be doing the trick. But it does make me tired.

I always get prescribed Meclizine, so I’m sure I’ll be back on it soon. Right now, I’m taking Dramamine, and one tablet doesn’t help, and two tablets knock me out, so one and a half seems to be the right dosage for me.

@CarolDM Things have been going great for me lately (knock on wood). Other than it being hot and humid here in Florida, I really have nothing else to complain about. Well....I guess I can complain that I didn't win the lottery last night, but truth be told I didn't even buy a ticket so that's my own fault! lol

I have had it in the past. 25 years ago they gave me Meclizine--it knocks me out. More recently a doctor tried to tell me it is from anxiety.

Usually my allergies only cause fatigue and maybe a little congestion, but every now and then the vertigo raises its ugly head and hits me hard. Looks like this is the year. As of right now, I plan on riding the rides at Disney, but that may change after I get off the first ride.

Trust me, I've had it checked out quite a few times. My inner ears get clogged when my seasonal allergies flare up, and it is the cause of the vertigo. Thankfully, it's a temporary thing, it never really hits me more than once or twice a year. And luckily, it's been a few years since I last had to deal with it.

I got it from what started as a little cold just after summer vacation began for me. There was nothing much the doctor could do except write a prescription which did nothing. Couldn't drive all summer, too. I had it all summer, but it miraculously cleared up once it was time to return to teaching. I got it again watching Fireworks Night after a NY METS game. We were staying at our son's house and meeting him and his then future wife for brunch. I couldn't walk straight, so hubs held me and took me straight into a CVS. All the pharmacist could do was give me Dramamine. Going through a revolving door for brunch did me in. We had to beg off brunch and return to CT. I slept all the way home and all afternoon. It took a few days to feel better. Since then, I'm very careful and learned what triggers it. I hope yours goes away soon and that you can enjoy Valentine's Day at Disney.

Thankfully I’m smart enough now to get on medication as soon as I start experiencing symptoms. I learned the hard way how bad it gets when I wait too long to address it. I hope you don’t get it again anytime soon. The medicine doesn’t always work on everyone.

For the last year or so, I 've had some type of vertigo - I guess you could call it that. Feels like I'm rocking on a boat. Nooo not rock 'n rolling but like the ground is moving when I walk. If I lie perfectly still in bed, it goes away. And it's off and on.. I've noticed it goes away after a deep sleep, but then other times the sleep trick doesn't work. No rhyme or reason to it, had all tests done, docs are not concerned. I don't feel it at all while driving. It's good you at least know the reason for yours.. the allergies. Mine's still a mystery and NO it's not all in my head. I don't have it right now, so that's good. Hope you had fun on V-Day and the vertigo was gone by then. P.S. Hey Jeff I just ordered the base for the St. Patrick's Day hat.

I was doing well over the past week, and then I went to visit a friend who has 7 dogs. I’m allergic to dogs, and being around that many caused my vertigo to hit me with a vengeance. So now I’m back on my medication to try and get it back under control. Sorry to hear you have unknown issues causing yours. If the doctors don’t seem too concerned, and it doesn’t affect your daily life, then I wouldn’t stress too much about it. I’m going to be at Disney for St Patrick’s Day so I hope I can still come up with an award-winning hat.

One of my co worker suffers from Vertigo. She has got this attack a few times in the last four years that I have been working with her. And she looks awful. Hope you get better soon. And can enjoy the Disneyland trip with your girlfriend. I guess it would be better to avoid the rides though. You can take a call later depending on how you feel.
