High school, Elementary school and kindergarten

I always wanted to write about this, as this is the only year I have a high schooler, an elementary school student and a kindergartener at home. Here we do not have middle school, after six years in elementary school (we call it primary school) and then it will be high school. Though I do not follow exactly the public school system, I usually wait until my kids' birthday to start their school year and just follow their own pace, this is the only time we have kids in three different "categories". Soon, my youngest will be 7 years old and start his elementary school journey. Time flies.... Sometimes I can't imagine how my youngest is going to be 7 years old, and my eldest is already a high schooler now.

It always amuses me that the German word 'kindergarten' has spread to other countries. It means 'children's garden'. What would that be in your language? Re the books in your picture under the title of your post: I know some people who've sent their children to Waldorf Kindergarten and Waldorf school and I had pupils at secondary grammar school who had come from a Waldorf school. From watching them and their achievements I can say that the Waldorf philosophy doesn't convince me.

So, that's the exact word in German as well? I always wonder why the letter "t" instead of "g" in kindergarten in English. In Chinese, it's called "children's garden" as well - refer to early childhood's children. It's interesting to know what you think. Sometimes I wonder how others view Waldorf education in Germany, as the first Waldorf school was there. I have always read about people who like about Waldorf philosophy (when I searched about Waldorf online), but did not know about others' views. Though I like the philosophy, part of it, I just can't cope with everything, so I usually mix and match with others whenever I find fit for my children.

@kaka135 It's not "the exact word in German as well". 'Kindergarten' *IS* a German word! 'Kinder' means 'Children' and 'Garten' means 'garden'. A normal healthy child wants to learn something when it starts school and is happy about his or her achievements. Waldorf children play too much, they don't even have schoolbooks in the beginning. If Waldorf pupils want to study at university, they have to pass the final exam at state schools. As they've never learnt anything like the pupils at state schools do, it can be very hard for them to master this. I remember a girl who wanted to leave her Waldorf school when she was 14 years old and move to a state school. She was examined in each subject but didn't pass one of them. The poor girl! What a shock for her to have to go back to Waldorf.

I was thinking the same myself - how other countries have taken on the word. I was interested in your views on the Waldorf system too. I didn't really know how it compared.

Australia doesn't have middle school either although there is an extra year for littlies. I think the sequence is Kindergarten, Pre-Primary, Primary then Secondary (High School).

Usually education institutions will change its course or textbook every 5 years or so.

Our school has never had a middle school either. I’m assuming you live in a low population area?!

I think you've been having too much fun teaching your kids... And am sure your high schooler loves that you have to learn subjects so you can teach him... I am quite sure you're doing an amazing job teaching them.
