An oldie but a goodie

We’ve just finished our dinner – lamb chops with vegetables – and very nice it was too. We bought custard today but forget to buy any tinned peaches to go with it so I exerted myself and made a steamed pudding. I used a recipe from my Golden Wattle Cookbook which is the one I had during my high school years.
It is made using what we were taught as the ‘second cake method’, creaming the butter and sugar, adding eggs then flour, and milk if needed. That’s the basic idea. The recipe I used only had 4 ounces of flour so the pudding is small but ideal for two of us. We’ll get several desserts from it. The pudding had a spoonful of jam in the bottom of the pudding dish. When you upend it, the jam is on top but I forgot to take a photo. Wouldn’t you just know it?
Haha – I just looked through my photos and here’s one I made some time ago. Tonight’s had apricot jam on it. Maybe tomorrow I’ll teach you the ‘first cake method’.

A dear friend of mine from high school still has some of the recipes that we made back in grade 9 home economics class. I have my Let's Bake Bread recipe book from when I was only 12 years old and a member of the 4-H club.
Those old recipes often have simple ingredients that most of us have in our home.

I remember my dad telling me when he was in the army and stationed in New Guina and Australia, they ate so much mutton he could not stand it when he came back home.
I've tried lamb in college. It was not bad!

You had me at lamb chops. So good. They are extremely expensive here, so to buy them is a big treat.

@MarieCoyle We grew up virtually living on lamb too for years and years.

I can understand that. I grew up eating lamb, my family always fixed it. But now it's not nearly as affordable or even available so when we do see it, the price is usually very high.

@JudyEv of course.
You said custard and it reminded me of a British TV show, probably the only thing from Britain that I actually know anything about. Doctor Who.
I Australia and UK are very different, but is Doctor Who a big thing there too?

The steamed pudding looks delicious ! The old recipe is not necessarily out-of-date.

As long as it tasted good, it doesn’t matter.

We almost lived on lamb when we were first married as my father would butcher his own sheep and every time we visited we were given sometiimes a whole sheep all cut up. We lived four hours away so only got home three or four times a year but the meat was still very much appreciated.
My predictive text wanted to write '.....but the meat was still very much alive'!!!

Chicken curry and rice would have been an enjoyable meal too.

Just checked.
The cake looks great, but I don't bake in Florida or eat sweets much.

Oh my, the meat was still very much alive is a sort of gruesome horror story.
