An oldie but a goodie

We’ve just finished our dinner – lamb chops with vegetables – and very nice it was too. We bought custard today but forget to buy any tinned peaches to go with it so I exerted myself and made a steamed pudding. I used a recipe from my Golden Wattle Cookbook which is the one I had during my high school years. It is made using what we were taught as the ‘second cake method’, creaming the butter and sugar, adding eggs then flour, and milk if needed. That’s the basic idea. The recipe I used only had 4 ounces of flour so the pudding is small but ideal for two of us. We’ll get several desserts from it. The pudding had a spoonful of jam in the bottom of the pudding dish. When you upend it, the jam is on top but I forgot to take a photo. Wouldn’t you just know it? Haha – I just looked through my photos and here’s one I made some time ago. Tonight’s had apricot jam on it. Maybe tomorrow I’ll teach you the ‘first cake method’.

I think after roast lamb, lamb chops are my favourite. Lamb is expensive here nowadays. We only buy it on special.

A dear friend of mine from high school still has some of the recipes that we made back in grade 9 home economics class. I have my Let's Bake Bread recipe book from when I was only 12 years old and a member of the 4-H club. Those old recipes often have simple ingredients that most of us have in our home.

@JudyEv I do not have the strength in my back to properly knead the dough for bread, but maybe next winter I can convince my hubby to get into it. There is nothing better than some homemade fresh bread or sweet rolls.

@Juliaacv Mum would have made a lot of bread in her time but later she only made it if we ran out of shop bread.

That's true. My recipe book has simple basic recipes, ideal for those haven't done a lot of cooking. I still use mine quite a lot.

With custard, I remember the old school dinners and like to have banana sliced in

I LOVED banana custard. Those old-style puddings were just the best. I like being able to buy ready-made custard rather than trying to make it without lumps.

@JudyEv Me too, I get the fresh custard from the chiller in the supermarket. I especially like the Madagascan vanilla custard

@Ronrybs I haven't seen that here. Mostly we buy the double thick custard, Vince's favourite.

I remember my dad telling me when he was in the army and stationed in New Guina and Australia, they ate so much mutton he could not stand it when he came back home. I've tried lamb in college. It was not bad!

I guess you get sick of anything if you have it enough. We grew up on it on the farm.

@JudyEv I can understand that. I grew up eating lamb, my family always fixed it. But now it's not nearly as affordable or even available so when we do see it, the price is usually very high.

We don't have dessert too often. Mostly it's peaches and ice-cream although lately we've replaced ice-cream with custard. I've no idea why.

@DianneN Maybe I thought it might be healthier with less sugar but they may not be the case. I must compare the two one day.

@JudyEv of course. You said custard and it reminded me of a British TV show, probably the only thing from Britain that I actually know anything about. Doctor Who. I Australia and UK are very different, but is Doctor Who a big thing there too?

We almost lived on lamb when we were first married as my father would butcher his own sheep and every time we visited we were given sometiimes a whole sheep all cut up. We lived four hours away so only got home three or four times a year but the meat was still very much appreciated. My predictive text wanted to write '.....but the meat was still very much alive'!!!
