Electric Cars Disadvantages

There is now a new focus to encourage everyone to purchase Electric Cars. However there are a few disadvantages. There are not many charging ports around. It is also time consuming to charge your car when you do find a charging port. The initial upfront expense to purchase an electric car is very high. Just cannot afford one. It is also expensive to replace the batteries in the car. Did you know you can go longer on a full tank of gas than on a full charged electric car. The only advantage to electric car is that there is less pollution. Do you intend to replace your car with an electric car?

Pretty wants our next car to be a hybrid gas/electric vehicle. Even though my state gets most of it's electricity from burning coal, it would still be a net gain for the environment.

@askme123 I found that electric car also more expensive than gasoline car. And I wonder if there is a flood too, will the engine and the battery get soaked?

Yes the dual thing would be good. However it would also be very expensive.

The batteries used by electric cars are very polluting and the states still have to check how they can dispose of them. By year 2035 in Europe only electric cars will be sold.

@askme123 Lithium batteries pollute for decades, this is going to be a serious problem.

Given the chance and if I have the resources, I would definitely switch to an electric car.

@askme123 considering how less it adversely it affects the environment, it is a good trade off.

@allen0187 Well yes that is true. The drawback is that we would spend so much money out of our pockets to help save the environment while there are still people who are polluting it by other means.

@askme123 That could be, but I'll most likely be dependent on someone else to drive me by that time.

There is not less pollution when it comes to an electric car. Massive mining happens to extract all the minerals that must be used to manufacture the batteries. All of the mining equipment runs on diesel. The minerals are then transported to the manufacturing facilities via ship (runs on diesel), train (runs on diesel), or in some cases a truck (which also runs on diesel). Massive amounts of water are used in the manufacturing process as well, which is contaminated and must be treated. Both the production process of the batteries and the treatment process of the contaminated water require massive amounts of electricity (which is produced from burning coal or natural gas). Not to mention the fact that the lifespan of the batteries is about 7-10 years, which means you will replace a battery at least once in a car's full life. These batteries cannot be recycled. They must be disposed of. Most of them will be buried and will potentially contaminate the ground water. The electricity produced to charge the cars also comes from natural gas and from burning coal. The environmental, carbon, and overall impact of an electric is ENORMOUSLY greater than the impact of a fossil fuel gas powered car—by leaps and bounds. I am not saying electric cars are a bad idea. I am simply saying it has nothing to do with protecting the environment and has everything to do with politics and it also has nothing to do with climate change. Most people only consider what comes out of the tailpipe and don't think about all the other stuff that happens behind the scenes.

If I read correctly, electric cars are silent compared to normal cars.

I agree to your points. Besides, I doubt the electricity will lose faster in cold places. I also heard a few cases that electric cars burn suddenly. Perhaps the temperature is high and then it has a bad effect on the battery.

Burn suddenly?? oh my.That is not good. You could be driving and it blow up. That is a disadvantage right there

Perhaps, if I could use both, that would be great, but a purely electric car is not for me. I still want the traditional way of gassing up.

I think they are such a good idea, if people have to travel long distances then a hybrid is probably a better idea, but if someone just does a commute and doesn't plan to travel for long periods of time, they would be so beneficial to the environment. More people who buy them, the more incentive to add ports, and also more chances to develop better batteries, more ways to charge, all that.

We intend to get an electric car when they work out all the kinks. Our dealership told us not to buy one, yet. There are lots of complaints regarding batteries not working in very cold weather.
