Memories of my Mother

I have some lovely memories of my mother. She was smart, strong, funny, a great cook, and a great mom. She died of rectal cancer in the mid-90s. Here is one memory that always makes me smile:
I don't know where she got this idea but from the time I was 3 or 4 (60+ years ago) she would put me to bed with the same wish- Lilacs on your pillow! Years into my relationship with her she still ended many conversations with the same phrase. Thoughts of laying in a comfy bed with lilacs on my pillow were all that was needed to send me off to dreamland.
It had to do with a mother's loving wish for a relaxed and calm, restful sleep. That sweet, fragrant smell of lavender-blue flowers has such a soothing effect on me to this very day.

That's a beautiful memory.
Until we moved into this house, we always had lilac bushes in our yards and we'd bring in bunches of the flowers when they were in bloom. It always made the house smell so good.

We had two bushes just outside the kitchen and I could smell them when in bloom while doing the dishes. It does make the house smell good doesn't it?

@celticeagle Oh, yes... Having them that close to the house must have been nice. Just open a window to bring in the sweet scent.
Mom had lilacs planted along the edge of the garden when we lived on the farm. I remember playing among the bushes with my youngest brother.

Do you use a lavender spray on your pillows when you go to bed now? Not the same smell, but I don't know of any lilac sprays.

What a lovely memory! I wonder where she got that from . . . maybe her mother would say that to her? Certainly a step up from the usual "good night" - a sweet visual and reminder of that wonderful floral scent - and remembrance of your mom.

No, grandmother wasn't sentimental like that. I wonder if she just made it up herself. She was a voracious reader so, perhaps, she read it somewhere.

@celticeagle We had lilac bushes at one of the houses we lived in when we were first married. They always smelled so nice.

Lovely memories and this made me smile. When our lilacs filled the garden in Latvia I cut some branches and put them in a large vase, It was so nice going to sleep with the scent of lilacs drifting around the room,
