Salisbury Steaks?

Normally I cook. But, there are days when you just want something fairly quick, cheap and easy. On days like that, some Salisbury steaks are just what the doctor ordered with some also easy sides. Usually there are two "brands" I get. Bremer is one we get from Aldi, and the other is On-Cor I usually get at Ruler Foods, a subsidiary of Kroger. I would say these "meals" are economical. The box of either is typically about 28 ounces and I pay about $3.49 on average for a box. That means I am paying $1.99 per pound. Considering pork is averaging $1.94 per pound and bone-in chicken thighs run around $1.79 per pound, I am well within "parameters." No, it is not healthy. But like anything, in moderation you are just fine. It's not like we eat Salisbury steak every day. But I do find they are quite good. Tasty and easy in a pinch. And we get three a piece between my wife and I. Banquet is a bit better quality. But much more expensive. And Bremer and On-Cor are just fine for my purposes. Plus, I always keep the gravy and use it for another dish. Do you like Salisbury steaks? How often do you eat them? And do you have a brand you like?

I would never buy cheap stuff like Banquet, On-Cor, or store brand stuff that I could certainly make myself and much better. It does not meet my standards for high quality food. Hard pass.

I actually do have a recipe I use (that's in my head) for homemade salisbury steaks and they ARE better than anything I can buy. But sometimes I don't want to cook which is why I choose a quick substitute like these to fill the gap. I actually find these to be rather good.

@NJChicaa I am sure you have eaten mystery meat something before. Not all things are as they seem.

I didnt know what a Salisbury steak was but on reading a recipe I did not find it unhealthy. Isn´t it just a kind of hamburger?

@porwest There is no such thing in the supermarkets here. But I´m sure they will arrive. If it is not healthy they will

@marguicha I am surprised by that. Granted, this is more of a Western thing, so maybe that's the reason? But you are right, if it is not healthy someone will probably introduce it eventually. lol

It is very similar, but at the same time quite different. To me they have a different overall flavor, and even when I make them from scratch I make them slightly different than I would make a hamburger. They also tend to be served with gravy and not as a sandwich. But certainly one could make a sandwich out of them if they wanted to.

We buy frozen chicken nuggets for those times when I don't feel like actually cooking. I either make mashed potatoes to go with them or I fry potato slices to go with the nuggets. We eat chicken nuggets two or three times a month. I am not fond of Salisbury steaks. (I can eat them if there isn't anything else but I'd rather not.)

I am not opposed to frozen chicken nuggets. Sometimes they just fill the bill, as they say. Occasionally I like to wrap them in bacon and then cook them. Added yummy.

I only started buying them again a couple of years ago. I definitely don't make a habit out of them.

My favorite brand is Vicki's Venison steaks. They're pretty good.

You seem to have established that. But I am glad you are still able to comment in any event. I enjoy your coming around.

They're not very good for you, but they ARE good. I like them when I don't really feel like cooking. So, they can be handy as well as yummy.

How do you cook yours?.In the oven or on the stove?

I cook them in the oven. The way these are made, cooked from frozen, it would be impractical to try to do it on the stove.

@moffittjc There was a period of time when I did not buy them for a very long time, but then one day I was like, "Haven't had these in a while and use to really like them," and now I have them in the house all the time.

For many years I did not buy them, and it wasn't until a couple years ago that I went back to them. I actually enjoy them.

Never heard of Salisbury steaks - certainly not in Salisbury! Are they just made of chicken, pork and beef scraps pressed together? I like the way it says 'Gravy and Salisbury steaks' - suggesting that gravy is the main thing in the pack. What do you do with the gravy?

Salisbury steaks are MOSTLY beef, but there can be variations of course as anything like this can be. But they are good. As for the gravy, I of course smother my Salisbury steaks in it. And if I have a baked potato with it I like to slather some gravy on that. I always keep the gravy and use it for something else later. You definitely get enough in the package. lol But you usually get 6 steaks too.

I imagine those are a bit different than the store bought kind as are the ones you might get in a restaurant. But maybe similar. I use a recipe for homemade ones and they are quite good, but nothing like the store bought ones.
