Pumpkins - a memory

I was holidaying in the US one year and got to experience Halloween. I saw heaps and heaps of pumpkins on road sides with no takers and this was on the next day of Halloween. I felt sad for those poor pumpkins as I knew they would sure be dumped. I even checked about those pumpkins that were carved in so many homes and was told they too would be dumped. What a waste!!! If they are dumped in the country they become food for many animals. Birds and deer both love them

Most likely they were donated to wildlife sanctuaries or something like that, animals love to eat pumpkins so they probably were not wasted.

If an animal gets to eat the pumpkins then that is not a waste.

@allknowing I worked at a fast good restaurant, we fried chicken, and every 2 hours we had to cook fresh, wr had to throw out the older. We could not give it to poor.

I am a witness. I spent a few days in different houses including family and friends Their pantries were loaded and they did not even know what products were loaded in there. Milk cans are returned with plenty of milk in them as they get fresh cans.

We do not carve pumpkins for Halloween, so what we grow is for food. I hope that those dumped pumpkins can be food for some animals at least.

@allknowing - I hope too, I know that the stores here donate to the animal shelters the vegetables that are no more good for humans at the end of the day.

Ok thought it was artificial pumpkins that were used. It surely is a waste. They could donate them to the shelters that need it. Make some good pumpkin soup.

This has been my gripe forever. Too many folks in the US want artificial processed food. Too many folks here see pumpkins as just something to play with. IF they want pumpkin pie they will either buy it or use a can of pumpkin. I am not a fan of food waste so this really bugs me about the US and I live here.

Talking about food I have seen garbage bins in the US laded with food. The food portions in the US are large and most cannot get through them.

@sallypup The first State we touched on our US package tour was New York We were taken to a restaurant for breakfast - my first experience I saw how huge the portions were. Later when I visited family I saw how huge the size of pittzas were. We took the left overs home but no one ate them Same with milk cans - milk wasted

@allknowing Very true. Like I said, I hate waste. When we first moved to my current house we ate breakfast out. I ordered pancakes and good grief they were the size of my plate. I ate one and brought one home and since we were kind of camping out for the first few days, my husband and I ate that blueberry pancake at different times, calling it bread.

Most livestock will eat pumpkins so I hope that's where some would have ended up.
