Questions About Sisters (Maybe they apply to brothers too?)

I have known two women very well, each of whom had one sister. The differences between the sisters in each case is night and day. They look nothing alike, they did not get along very well as kids and they were not close as adults, taking quite different directions in life. I had three sisters, but the youngest was 15 when I was born, so we were never very close and neither were they really. I had no brothers, so was like an only child. So, I am wondering, if you, as women have sisters? Do you get along? How different are you from your sister? Does it make a difference if there is more than one sister ? As I started writing this I thought of at least one myLotter who mentions a brother in the same way, as being so different. So, I guess it happens to men too. What do you think?

No sisters, but I would have liked one or two. Instead, I have been blessed with two brothers, one of which I am very close to. We are alike in so many ways except for our politics.

Good for you. Have you known friends who had sisters that were quite different?

@DianneN Those personality differences are so interesting. Being twins like that they were probably raised very much alike too.

@JamesHxstatic Yes, and identical twins had such different personalities. One was out going and friendly, while the other was a sourpuss and a complete dullard

We had a couch-surfer who had a twin sister but they didn't get along at all. I grew up almost like an only child. My brother and sister are twins but eight years older. I get on well with my sister but my brother was always quite jealous of me. I could understand why once I grew up. He had very bad eyesight, couldn't drive and was stuck on the farm. He must have been very lonely while I could drive, go out with friends, etc.

Jealous is then not good to family members. It's the cause of all the evil which ends up with family wrangles.

My sister and I fought like cats and dogs when we were younger. As adults altough not especially close, I would say she is the only one who is consistently in my corner and likewise I hope. There is a special bond between sisters who are close in age I think.

We were five sisters and now four. We are different and though we got along well when under one roof it has not been so later in life.

I see, it is sort of strange how people can grow apart, but others, friends, spouses, even where we live can influence us.

There were 16 kids in my family. I was next-to-the-youngest. I got along with some of them and ignored the others. One of my brothers couldn't leave me alone. I could be sitting in a corner somewhere reading and he'd walk up and take my book away and wouldn't give it back until I found mom and she made him give it back. Then he'd pester me until she made him leave me completely alone. He didn't do that with any of my brothers so I don't know why he did it to me. He was also the one who would pick me up and squeeze my stomach until I was screaming for help. Once, he squeezed me so hard it caused my appendix to burst. I was in the hospital for over two weeks getting my appendix taken out and getting the inside of my abdomen pumped and cleaned until there were no more fluids loose inside me. (Dad beat the living crap out of Joe after the doctors told dad that a large amount of pressure was needed to rupture an appendix from the outside. While dad was beating Joe, he kept yelling at him to leave people alone.)

@DaddyEvil, Holy Moley, 16 kids in itself sounds overwhelming and to have a sadistic jerk like Joe around to torment just one was a terrible experience for you. Did he grow up to be "normal"?

@JamesHxstatic Please define "normal". He never grew out of tormenting me and he was always twice my size. When he was 17, he started tormenting some of our neighbors until they called the police on him. They pressed charges and the judge told Joe he could join the military or spend five years in jail. He chose the Navy... By the time he got discharged, I was grown and out of the house. At family reunions, I stayed away from him. He caught Covid about a year ago and passed away. That was probably the nicest thing Covid ever did for the human race.

I am the youngest of three, all girls. My two elder sisters are like cats and dogs when they were younger. They have 4-5 years age gap with me. I grew up being the runner (meaning since I am the youngest, I do the chores they asked me too no questions ask). We are all adults now, I say that we are close to each other but moreso my elder sisters

I don't have sister's I only have brothers I do get along with them but also, they abused as a child sexually, so I keep my distance from them for a good reason. They do get along since they are closer in age. Like 2 years different where for me between them is 7-5 years ago difference. My kids they are each roughly 2 years apart. With my only daughter being the oldest but she gets along really well with her baby baby brother they are 4 years apart and 6 days. Both January babies. Honestly when it comes to siblings, I don't think it matters to much about gender and age as it does just personalities. Sometimes it's easier to get along with someone when your younger not knowing yet what boundaries you need or want till your older.

@JamesHxstatic I watch my kids pretty closely so and it's something that I notice about all siblings. Sometimes it's just toxic personalities play against each other. Don't be sorry for things you cannot control I can tell that is something anyone that has been abused we don't want to hear the sorry because it doesn't change for fix things, we don't want it or need.

That makes me realize that I cannot blame my father for not having given me any siblings. I could have been as lonely even if I had one. That is why I am trying to make JJ accept that he is my brother. He is very nice with his sister.

I have no sister, I have a brother and he is only 18 months younger than me. We are very different, but we went along very well when we were kids. We continued to get along very well as adults, until he divorced and a younger woman came to live with him.

I have two sisters - one is 15 years older and one is 5 years older. I always got along with the oldest, but the older one and I fought ALL the time as kids. However as adults, we are very close. All three of us live in different cities (and states), but we keep in touch online.

That is the best way and may be due to a difference in cultures. Families in the US seem to go different ways.

I have one younger sister - we are 7 years apart. We look nothing alike. She and I get along, but we're not exactly close. There are similarities, but our hearts and thinking processes are very different. My father passed away a few months ago, and it was then I realized how different we really are.

@JamesHxstatic It's been continuous rain all day today . . . supposed to be at it's heaviest about now - and later tonight. We are good thus far - knock on wood. But my mom's house has minor leakage in her roof from the last dose of heavy rain. But better rain than loads of snow!

Interesting to find that out, isn't it? How are you doing with all that rain? A friend in Van Nuys has to replace his whole roof on his older house.

I have a brother one year younger than me. We are opposites. I liked math, sports and music. He liked history, English and politics. He hates sports and people who like sports. Our relationship is...difficult. My step-sister is 12 years older than me. I looked up to her as a kid. She got me into guitar. I have visited her in Italy. But we're not in touch so much right now.
