A Wonder of a film

The photo is of some of the ethnic dancers at the Harmony Day we attended. The little boy loved his sword!! After the entertainment, we watched the film, Wonder, on a blow-up screen. The adult leads were Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson while the two boys were played by Jacob Tremblay (August/Auggie) and Noah Jupe (Jack). The film tells the story of Auggie’s traumatic introduction to school after some years of having been home-schooled by his mother. Auggie has Treacher Collins syndrome which is characterized by facial deformities of the ears, eyes, cheekbones and chin. It occurs sometimes as a genetic disorder but more often as a new mutation. In most cases, the face is quite grotesque. In the film, Auggie has undergone 27 operations to help him see, hear and speak – and to look a little more normal. It is beautifully acted, incredibly sad in parts but has a wonderfully happy and positive ending. It was my type of film.

I saw that movie, yes, it is a sad movie but the happy ending kinda leaves you so hopeful...and not sad at the end of it.

I think I or my daughter have the book for that. If we don’t still I’ll be sad as now I definitely want to read it. The movie sounds really good and I love Julia Roberts.

@JudyEv if I recall it was a fairly short one. Looked like it was geared toward teens maybe be why I got rid of it if I did. I’ll have to check.

I love this movie very much it makes me cry. But I am glad that the boy ended up with such lovely and understanding parents to help him. He has a lot of things going on but he was blessed with the perfect family to care for him and understand him.

Those little boys and girls in the photo are so lovely. I feel really sorry for this girl described in the movie. Kids can be cruel.

Some kids are very cruel indeed. And some adults aren't very much better.

@JudyEv You are right and it's up to the parents to teach to their children not to take fun of those kids who "look different".

Treacher Collins syndrome is a really terrible disease ! Perhaps ,this was the reason why Auggie was home-schooled by his mother.

@JudyEv The mother had really given much thought to the matter of how the kid felt.

I'm sure it was but then she decided it was time for him to get out into the community more. She choose a time when there would be many new children starting at the school so he wouldn't be the only new student.

Fair enough. Although it ends happily enough, such kids are bound to encounter hassles all their lives.

Treacher-Collins syndrome is one of those disorders that are really interesting to learn about but you are glad you don't have it. Affected people often have no collarbones either. I've never heard of the film but it sounds good.

@JudyEv I'd not heard of Mercy Ships before. I support Smile Train which provides treatment to people with cleft lips and/or palate. These are congenital conditions which have such a big impact on a person's life and yet can be repaired quite quickly and simply where facilities exist.

It's a great film. You would wonder how they could even start repairing the faces of such people. I didn't know about the lack of collarbones.

The movie sounds good and one of my type. I love Julia Roberts. I had heard good feedback about the same movie from someone else too. I will remember the name and see if I can get it somewhere to watch. That little boy in the picture does look very proud holding his sword

@JudyEv Yes, it is. I can very well relate to that. Being a parent of a child with difference and also meeting such children and parents in my profession. Life is more challenging for such people and their families.

The film is fictional but looking at how some of these people look, I can believe it takes a LOT of operations to make it easier for them to breathe, talk, eat, etc.
