The photo I used in a recent post has a photo of what I thought was a Jacob’s sheep. This breed can have more than one horn. However, they are goats in the photo in the previous discussion which many of you thought and you were correct. On close inspection, the third horn turned out to be an ear. That will teach me to take a bit more time when I post photos. However THIS photo is of a Jacobs’ sheep but the extra horns aren’t easy to see.

This one is a sheep but the other discussion showed two goats. Now I have really mixed people up!

@JudyEv oh gosh I reread it and understand now. It was around midnight and I was very tired so I read it wrong.

@shaggin It's okay but I always feel I should correct an error. It's never a big deal. I hope you slept well.

@JudyEv that's why I was wondering though it's a good one merino I guess? That's the only sheep species I know

@Laurakemunto I think it is a Jacob's. There are dozens of breeds and most are very different from each other. Do you like this one? It's a Schwarznasenschaf or Valais Blacknose, photo courtesy of David Gerke, CC BY-SA 3.0 , via Wikimedia Commons

I wonder why it's called a Jacob sheep. I'm too lazy to research online. Its fur is really thick. Sharing photos is good and makes the post more original especially if the photo is yours.

The name is from the Bible story about Jacob. He got his father-in-law to agree to let him have any streaked or spotted sheep, then he carefully bred more of those ones for himself!

Yes, many breeds have horns and some have had the horns bred out of them. So there is a Dorset Horn breed and a Poll Dorset breed which doesn't have horns but is similar in other respects. Here is a photo of a Dorset Horn. I took the photo at the Perth Royal Show. I bet he is very proud of his horns but they must weight a lot.

I knew they were goats but like you I thought there was an extra horn showing. It does sometimes happen.

@JudyEv Not in person. But I came across these playing online one time. They would be fun to have.

See! I told ya! Now, about the Jacobs' sheep... I guess the curly horns protect their eyes, because they can't do much harm to anything else, curled up that way.

Did you know that the Bible story is the first documented instance of selective breeding?

Really? I didn't know that. Are you able to be more specific? I have 'friends' who insist that everything in the Bible is gospel (pardon the pun) but I get hung up with how much inbreeding there must have been.
