A revolving cupboard in our bathroom

I’m sure every country has its own versions of plumbing. We had to ring the owners of our house-swap to ask her how to turn the water on in the shower. There is a cord you have to pull with activates a switch then away you go. Mostly we find the room size in houses here to be quite small compared to what we’re used to. This isn’t a criticism, just an observation. The bathroom here is small but there is an innovative ‘cupboard’ (on the right) which is suspended from the ceiling and rotates. As you can see in the photo, one side has compartments for bathroom requisites. The opposite side is a mirror. Behind the cupboard is the hand-basin, which I know is often called a ‘sink’ in other countries but not in Australia. The sink is in the kitchen where you wash your dishes. Just another difference between countries.

Different names for the same things. That's just so you can pretend to be superior when one of us goes to Australia and has to ask about something.

Interesting with the rotating cupboard . . . not sure if that saves or requires more space. Yep - it would be "sink" for us . . . although "hand-basin" does make sense (it would be difficult to wash dishes in a hand basin ).

@JudyEv Ah, so there was a regular cupboard too. The rotating cupboard is a cool idea . . . I was thinking how it would work in our small bathroom, but I don't think it would work.

@much2say It needs a bit extra room to allow for the swivelling. If it were in a corner or against the wall, you could find room for a mirror elsewhere.

Because it needs to revolve it actually sticks out in the available space. I think I might have done things a bit differently. Stuck a mirror on a wall somewhere and had a regular cupboard in a corner.

Interesting... It could be achieved just as easily (if not easier) by putting a mirror on the door to the cupboard.

I think so too and it wouldn't have to poke out in the room as much.

That's so interesting. I've never had the opportunity to travel once I was on my own so this is fun to learn about. I think here in the US we waste too much space. I don't have a lot of space as my mobile home is only 16x56 which is big enough for me but I try to imagine why those actors who live alone have to have 30 room mansions to live in, that just doesn't make any sense to me.

If I had a big house, I'd definitely want a cleaner or house-keeper to go with it.

It's going to seem very small when our niece's son comes to stay for a while.

I suppose so but I'm not sure that a regular cupboard and a mirror behind the door wouldn't be just as good.

a rotating cuboard that sounds different. One time when we visited Ireland..well the only time, it was on a tour. One of the people on the tour was a couple from New Zealand. The guy said he was thinking of writing a book about showers and or toilet fixtures all around the world, since they were all a bit different.

We found that too. To us, our system seems simple but perhaps to others it's not so easy.

It does poke out a bit though as it needs a bit extra room to rotate.

I am glad you got the shower to work. A revolving cupboard would be kind of neat.

It's neat for a while but it also takes more space perhaps than just a normal cupboard.

That is interesting because things are different in all countries In Latvia, we had a very small space that had just a toilet and on the opposite side of the small hallway the bathroom with tub and shower and sink.

I've seen that quite often too. The toilet isn't always in the bathroom. At our son's place, there is a separate toilet downstairs.

Yes we call them all sinks here (kitchen and bathroom) That's a pretty unique cupboard in that bathroom. Wonder if the other people are finding the same differences in your house? Did they have to ask you how to work anything?

I think, at the moment, they are still in the air. They left on Thursday so they're probably still getting there. We did leave a lot of instructions for the different things so hopefully they'll manage.

@JamesHxstatic All the shop fronts either side of us are being painted. There is a scissor-lift just outside our tiny balcony. It seems the whole street is getting a face-lift.

It suits us very well as it's right in the middle of town and within walking distance of lots of places.
