Once a family home - Turlough Park House, Co. Mayo, Ireland

I’ve posted several photos from items within Turlough Park House in Co. Mayo, Ireland. I’m not sure I’ve posted a photo of the house itself so I’m doing that now. The house was built in 1865 to replace a much older building. There are three floors of living space in the main building and a range of lower outhouses and stables built around two courtyards. The kitchen is separate from the main house to reduce the chance of fire and to lessen cooking smells. Who would want to lessen cooking smells unless it was from cabbage? This moderately-sized ‘Big House’ was designed by Thomas Newenham Deane and featured some elements of the Gothic Revival Style such as the steeply pitched roof and multicoloured decorative stonework.

What's wrong with the smell of cooking cabbage? YUM! It looks like it's a big place. I wonder how many of the rooms were for family and how much of it was for the servants?

The servants possibly lived in one of the outhouses.

I bet the servant's rooms were very tiny,

It is a large and beautiful hose. In the past it was important to avoid that the "smell of the kitchen" invades the house. I remember how much my mother was careful when we had guests.

@JudyEv Back in time with wood there was a serious danger.

It also reduced the risk of fire in the main house.

Sometimes, when I pass a big house like that, I wish I lived in the days when they were single family homes with a loyal staff to take care of everything, and not broken up into a bunch of apartments. But then, I wouldn't have the conveniences of modern times. Another reason for the kitchen being separate from the main house was to keep the house cool in the summer.

Imagine the balls and parties that might have been held there.

Wow, one room of that house is the size of our house ! So big and beautiful! Lesson cooking smells? Then I'd move into the kitchen so I can have the smells all to myself .

@JudyEv I guess some places are super small - and then there is the opposite like the Turlough!

We had a German couch-sitter once and she said our kitchen was larger than her whole apartment.

Cabbage being cooked always attracts blowflies for some reason.

@LindaOHio Blowflies in Australia are bigger and their eggs quickly hatch into maggots. Maybe that happens with house-flies too but I've never seen any maggots from them.

@JudyEv How are they different from regular house flies?

It would be nice to live in those times but only if you were one of the gentry.

That sure is a grand house, I like all the windows at the top. Did you go up into the area where the windows along the roof are?

No, we weren't allowed into the upper rooms.

It's quite a magnificent house. Having the kitchen removed from the main house was typical during the 18th and 19th centuries as I have learned from visits to Tryon Palace in New Bern, NC, and Historic Williamsburg, Virginia.

I don't like the style and the color, it looks depressive to me.

For its time, it would have been classes as 'moderately sized'.

As beautiful as it is that is one house I would not want to have to heat, clean and upkeep,

It would only be okay if you had a lot of servants to do all the work.

Those were the days when such homes were much sought after. Affording one is another matter. Good that it is a museum piece now so that one can have a look at the lifestyle of generations back.

The previous owners tried a number of ways to keep the place viable but in the end they had to sell it.

That's a gr8 looking traditional British mansion. The maintenance seems top notch going by its looks despite being so old.

It looks like a castle for me. It sounds like the separate kitchen is a dirty kitchen.

Not necessarily but if a fire started there were very few ways of stopping it.
