This mini-run of ladies during the monthlong look at 1963 has been fun. There are more women to come, but we close out the three in a row from sixty years ago with one of the great classics from not only girl groups, but from the early days of rock and roll. My Boyfriend’s Back - The Angels I wonder if the Grumpy Cat Slave is reading, thinking, “Hmm, wonder if she’ll mention the fact that Ronnie James Dio played trumpet on this song.” Why yes, I will!! Yep, one of the most distinctive vocalists in heavy metal history was one of the session musicians on this song. I know, next thing you know I’ll be telling you Jimmy Page played guitar on Petula Clark’s “Downtown.” Anywho, this is another one of those “I overheard a girl say this and now it’s a song” songs. Bob Feldman heard a girl tell a guy that her boyfriend was back, and the next thing you know everybody was singing and clapping along!! The Angels are thought of as a one-hit wonder, but they actually had two other top 40 hits: “Til” in 1961, and “I Adore Him” later in 1963. Two of the original members are still living, and the group is in the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. Hey la, hey la, it’s a classic!
