Skeletons as rigging on the coffin ship monument

The photo is of the National Famine Monument, a bronze statue depicting a ‘coffin ship’. Coffin ships were those crowded with emigrants, desperate to escape the Great Irish Famine, and those displaced by the Highland Clearances. The ship-owners provided as little water and food as possible and the ships were hopelessly overcrowded. Death rates regularly reached 20% and those who died were buried at sea. It was said that sharks followed the boats due to the number of bodies thrown overboard. The Monument is sited at the base of Croagh Patrick mountain in Murrisk, County Mayo, Ireland. Sculpted by John Behan, it uses skeletons and bones as rigging and is Ireland’s largest bronze sculpture. It was unveiled in 1997, the 150th anniversary of the Irish Famine by the then President of Ireland, Mary Robinson.

By an odd coincident, I just read Henry David Thoreau's account of the aftermath of a shipwreck. "The brig St. John, from Galway, Ireland, laden with emigrants, was wrecked on Sunday morning" about a mile from shore at Cohasset, on Grampus Rock. The Shipwreck

A great many didn't make it across the sea. It was an awful time for the country. Fancy having just read about this.

I can see why people waited 150 years to "commemorate" something like that. The people who were forced to go to flee Ireland would have hated knowing there was a reminder of that time anywhere in the world, in my opinion.

I suppose so but I do think such terrible times should be acknowledged or the sacrifices become forgotten.

@JudyEv I can just see how well "commemorating" slavery would go over in the US.

@DaddyEvil I thought 'commemorating' was a better word than 'celebrating' but there is something more suitable.

This looks interesting. I like learning about history of countries. Have not read about this before. Mostly US, Afro, and Asian Literatures were studied during my time in college.

Ireland has a very tragic history during the past century or two.

I've read a little about the hardships many Irish faced back then, it was extremely sad to say the least.

Mary Robinson's home town is Ballina. She spoke very well when Biden was here.

I honestly didn't realise that skeletons had been incorporated into the design until I read about it later. I was a bit shocked when I went back to look at the photo.

That was a horrific time, people were trapped between two awful fates. If you've ever had an outbreak of potato blight in your home-grown produce it makes you think of them.

@JudyEv Oh yes that really is horrible : ( And the worst thing about blight is that it may not appear to have affected the potatoes at first. You can just imagine the crops being harvested and stored away as usual - and then the horror when the clamps were opened months later in winter and all the potatoes were rotten.

I helped harvest potatoes once standing on the back of a machine but when a rotten one came through, the stench was horrific.

How sad a thing to be commemorated, but how good to recall it as well.

I meant to say that a while ago I heard a radio programme featuring Mary Robinson, she was so engaging and witty. Sadly I can't remember what programme it was so I can't point you to it!

I haven't heard anyone say a word against her yet. Her biography is next door in a charity shop but I already have a couple more books than I came with and they are not the lightest thing to carry home.

Yep, it's a statue so created from whatever material he used. Steel in this case, I think.
